    Feathers

I've been collecting feathers that I've found along the trail while walking over the last year or so. Been wondering what I was going to do with them. Today they became still life subjects. My goal is to keep collecting until I have a pound of these then see if they weigh as much as a pound of lead.

All of these were shot with some backlight from a nearby window. They were all placed on white or beige card stock. Working at developing my processing skills. Any comments will be appreciated.

Great photos, Tim. I like the composition of #1 and #4 the best. There is a nice contrast between the softness and hardness in each of these photos.
Tell me when you have a conclusive result in your weight experiment .. LOL

I love #1 Tim...as for your statement about it being the same weight as a pound of lead, seriously...no. Have you ever heard of the the phrase "light as a feather"?

I like them all but 1 and 3 for me Tim. No. 4 reminds me of a field of corn.

    Re: Feathers

I like #3 and #4. They show the contrast nicely between the 'zipped-up' barbs and free barbs.

As to weighing them, how are you going to calibrate your weighing machine?

#1, 3 and 4 for me Tim, the light in the second image is a bit of a distraction for me.

I like #1 and #4. The second one is too 'staged'

    Re: Feathers

    Hi Tim,

My thoughts, for what they're worth, are:

#1 - I would have liked more Depth of Field, this was shot at f/5.6 - I notice that all the others were all shot at f/13, so perhaps you came to the same conclusion. I do like it as a composition and the exposure is good, perhaps it might stand a little increase in contrast; e.g. by setting the black point.

#2 looks like an experiment (to be applauded), that didn't quite work out - for me the sunlit patches are way too bright and their shapes are not complimentary to the feather or the shot composition. Perhaps try the idea again, but with a bit more thought and cunning applied.

#3 is an interesting one, but again I'd like more contrast

#4 is probably my favourite of the series; nice lighting and exposure and although the histogram still shows a lack of full tonal range, my eyes do not see it when viewing the image large

Shooting feathers is something I must try one day.

Welcome to the CiC forums from me, Dave

Nice collection of feathers and a great job with the presentation.

I think I need to start carrying a little zip lock bag.
