    Hi Stef,

I enjoyed your series too - and am now regretting I didn't shoot something similar when I travelled this year.

Did you ask (the boat hirers) why the chimney had a little cover over it?
It obviously caught your interest too.

    Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave, I didn't ask but do know the boiler was under that chimney. I just loved the geometry of the lines and circles.

So if you know the answer I'm about to learn and if not..

Was I to guess if it's not h&s mad, as the roof gets used I'd say just a safety to stop people burning themselves from the boiler exhaust/chimney.....

Nevermind seems it's called a cutter breaks the exhaust for bridges and tunnels. Found it looking for what the side bits are called.

Given it is a rental boat, I'd assume the welded on stiff disk on four legs are to protect the rather flimsy chimney cowl, which already incorporates a rain cover, from damage by people walking on top.
It must also help (on H&S grounds when hot) deter people walking along the edge of the boat hull, from grabbing it to steady themselves (which also might damage the end of the flue).

Not sure, from my quick research, I follow how it helps (with exhaust) when passing under bridges and through tunnels, except from casual scraping damage.

    Cheers, Dave

Still guessing I presume it's legacy now turned h&s. I spotted the cowl too seems superfluous now beyond safety.

I suspect in the days of fossil fuels whilst going under bridges/tunnels it might aid smoke dispersion, I suspect for a view to the front of the boat more than any other reason(tunnels would of been foot walked iirc). Turning a cloud of smoke into a fog by cutting(my guess) the stream of smoke.

Hopefully someone in the know can enlighten us.

Thanks Steve quite partial myself to those 2. Initially spotted the flare on 1 but felt it gave something to it rather than take away. In hindsight it seems a touch blue think I need to go over them again a little.

Guessing you see quite a bit of the canals where you are.
