    Morning Smokey Sun

Smoke from all the wildfires here in the Northwest, has filled my sky with heavy smoke. This makes the sun red. I took this an hour ago, with my Tokina AT-X 400 and my Pentax K10D, handheld! Amazingly I actually got two sunspots, which usually you don't get without a solar filter, or solar scope.

I've seen that same site down here in So Cal a few too many times for my liking. It doesn't bode well for the countryside.
    Nice shot though.

I've seen it here, way too many times also. There's about 6 fires in Montana, a huge one in Eastern Washington, and another in Idaho. It's been tinder dry around here, and we had 100+ degree weather back in June!

You can also get sun-spots if you use a true IR filter and also if the image is projected from a telescope onto an area and that is photographed ....I did the first and our local paper did the second. An interested viewer comparing the results noted the different sun-spots each approach achieved.

I was just surprised to see the sun spots, as I've only seen them using my solar telescope previously.

We had a couple of weeks' worth of those skies earlier this summer, Carol. It made me all the more appreciative of blue skies when the smoke finally cleared.

I never did capture any of the red suns I witnessed during those weeks, so thanks for doing it for me! The sunspots are a bonus!

Janis, I was quite surprised to see the sunspots, and very happy! Yes, I want our blue skies back; I just pray no more firefighters lose their lives on these fires.

Carol, I once told a friend that Montana (where his sister lives) is located at the end of the world. We had fun fossicking at the mines around fall...and getting cold-ish at the time...anyway, moving on...I have seen the same sort of sun when I was living in Australia which can be too dry during the summers too and with smoke filling the air, it can be very scary. I hope you and many others will be safe...Do take care...

Beautiful shot! I really, really like this one...
