Following advice, photograph your loved ones

Still a bit intimidated at posting on this site - recent images no good so this is an older one, the first ever image with a real camera of Leesha the "Schnoxer" (Schnauzer x Boxer) a rescued delight. No pp - did not know what that meant a few months ago....thanks to this site and all the helpful comments, one learns...slowly. Hk

I hope that feeling will quickly pass, Helen. And with images like this there is certainly no need to feel intimidated. That's a lovely picture. The lighting is gorgeous.

And very often that's the best way to do it. Then what you do learn has a better chance is sticking. Whereas if you try and learn everything at a furious pace, most of it is washed away and forgotten.

Agreed with all of the above comments. I can only add that the depth of field is also wonderful.

Great shot of a neat dog! One very slight improvement might be the slightest of a vignette which lowers the brightness of the background and IMO places a bit more attention on the dog!

Some of the big pluses for this image are: the lighting and the level at which the portrait was shot. The lighting forms catchlights in the eyes... Of course, the very intent expression really adds to the overall effect!

Helen, welcome to the forum! I fully understand being hesitant posting our images here, when you see the outstanding photos of others! However, the only way we can learn, is to post our images, for feedback from others.

This photo is a real keeper; the intent expression, the happiness, the light in the eyes, all rolls into a great image! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Helen, your shot has to two main ingredients, nice light and great content. After that it's just style points

Quite often, Helen, the most interesting posts, and those which get more replies go something like 'I got this wrong so what should I have done' or simply 'How could I have done better?'

And 'Is this OK or can it be improved' etc.

Quite often the perfect images just get a 'Looks Good' or something similar.

So yes, do your best and post without any fear. CinC is a lot friendlier than some sites where anything which isn't absolutely perfect gets 'ripped to pieces'

    Hi Helen!

I’ve started trying a genre of photography I knew very little about. Still don’t for that matter. But if I hadn’t posted my crap I wouldn’t have gotten some of the best help you could hope for! So you know what I’m gonna do? Why, post more crap of course!

Now this shot, on the other hand, is not even close to crap and I would be happy to put it up were I you!

Beautiful light, great expression, good exposure, good detail, good composition, You have Leesha’s eyes at or above the upper third line of the frame. You left some room in the frame for her(?) to look into. Lots of good stuff going on.

When you get into post a bit more, or if already are some, in addition to Richard’s vignette suggestion you might give the eye and close area a little TLS (tender loving sharpening!).

We have two rescue mini Schnauzers Helen! Great pups even if they are a bit vocal at times! They take after their Daddy in that respect!

They are total lap warmers for their Mommy!

I'll make you a deal Helen! We post up our stuff for better or worser and we'll help each other get through this thang together!

    Sound good?

You are all so very kind and helpful. Once I have learned 'how to' all the things you are suggesting I'll get to it - at least I now know what to do, thank you. Donald you are so right, slowly or else loose it! However photographers and their delicate equipment don't do well in a desert so I've decided to take our company's marketing images myself (horse riding safaris), the pressure is on to get it right, and quickly! Thank you all again, kind people

What a beautiful shot of Leesha, Helen!!! I agree with others about the lighting and the intent...I guess I am late to this post to give my thoughts when everyone had given theirs which are the same as mine...Keep shooting...it is the best therapy to the soul.
