A very nice image Jeff & I really like John's suggestion.
As you first posted it, I really like the light highlighting the lighthouse in the overall scene, for me, it just needs a smaller or other element on the left to balance the composition & give reason for the space.
That is why I prefer the second version.
It does look a lovely place to be.
Hi Jeff,
Just to add to the discussion, my thoughts on the original image are:
I like the shot containing both* types of 'sailing'; water and air (* unless I missed a distant 'land yacht')
I don't think the area to left of the Bug Light contributes a lot
I agree Bug Light is rather too central
Therefore, my crop suggestion would be to trim only from the top and left side.
I'd have the top about where John 2 does, but I'd take even more off the left hand side; leaving only two panels of railing after the steps.
Good exposure and colours.
HTH, Dave
Nice Jeff, I like John's edit!
Doug, my thoughts are that you have the kite flying out of the comp in one direction and the yacht sailing out of the comp in the other. Generally (but I know, not always), it is more comfortable on the eye to have something moving into the frame than out of it.
Nice image. The lighting on the lighthouse is excellent. IMO both cropped versions are improvements over the original with the vertical crop being the best of the three. Sometimes there's just too much and particularly with the boat facing out of the frame it doesn't contribute to the image. On the other hand the vertical crop places the hang glider moving into the frame and moving towards the source of light. Much mobetta IMO.
Another in the series

Yup, that's what I had in mind Doug.
With regard to directions of travel relative to the frame, I have to accept that you had no control over that and I'm sure if 'conditions and positions' had allowed allowed a shot (a few minutes earlier) that had one or both heading 'in to' the composition, we'd be looking at it now.
Due to the nice directional, low sunlight, it precludes any efforts in Photoshop to 'clone-reverse' either without it looking 'wrong' - yeah, it did cross my mind
The guy was really erratic and sailing all over the place. I shot the best I could before he left the area.
All great edits of John, I think it brought out the best of all crops to emphasize the glider...
Very nice shots Jeff I like Doug's crop for #1 and John's edit for #2.
