Sgwd Yr Eira (Fall of Snow)

I've been to this waterfall a few times and it is normally quite busy with tourists, so this morning I set off at 5am hoping to get there before anyone else. There are another 3 waterfalls in the area but this is the best one in my opinion.

I got a few good shots with different compositions which I will post up when I get a chance, but here is the first one:

Disclaimer: I have to admit that I hauled the logs you see in the foreground into position

Well worth the effort Matt - both the landscape gardening and the early (very early ) rise.

Matt, you are cheating, you are not a landscape gardener. It was good that you did though.

Very nice capture Matt. The light is beautiful, I know how hard it is to get good light there .

The log haul works for me, and they suggest that a square crop with the lichen covered logs positioned to the lower left might prove interesting.

I really do have to get back down there and for another shoot

    Good morning, Matt,

I like the composition and detail in this image.

I do have a question, though. Was the vegetation really that yellow? I am not familiar with lichens and greenery in your area.

You're right James, I have shot this fall a few times but have never been happy with the results. So today was a relief!

Thanks Marie, not quite that yellow. I have adjusted the hue of the green slightly. (For no other reason than I prefer the colour )

Love it Matt. Love the silkiness of the water and the colors are spot on.

The only thing that bothers me is the raw end of the one log. What is your thought on a slight crop off the bottom, just above the light spot of the log?

Great shot. Did you use an ND filter and what was the exposure time?

Thanks Doug, I've kind of grown attached to the raw end of the log

I took an ND filter with me but I didn't need to use it, the shot was taken just before the sun came up and it was pretty dark and gloomy anyway.

The waterfall is in a very deep gorge.

My settings for this shot were:

    ISO100
    F11
    13"

I like everything about this image, especially the three-dimensional feel certainly helped by the logs. When people accuse you of moving the logs, just tell them that you were moving leading lines.

The scene appears to be an upper waterfall and a lower cascade that is a bit behind the waterfall. Have I got that right?

    Thanks Mike,

Yes there is a small ledge that jets out and which creates a smaller cascade, you can walk behind the waterfall on the ledge itself.

Very cool shot Matt, ah well, I will add it to the list of re-visits, but not sure about the time - maybe I will try an evening shot

Hope you left the logs there - saves me from dragging them back

Haha cheers Mark! I did leave the logs there, just pray we don't have any heavy rain before you get back up there

Did you really have to drag that log up there for the shot? What a dedicated photographer...you will be going places one day soon ...

Haha Izzie, I didn't actually bring the logs from the house! They were already there I just put them into position.

That seems to me to be the makings of a wonderful, unique photograph.
