    This Morning's Moose 2.0

Had a short window before the rain started this morning to look for a few moose. It was an active morning.

All shot handheld with Nikon D4/80-400mmG.
Since no light box working all uploaded at max 700px horizontal to avoid the system resizing them.

    1) The snow is creeping down the mountain. Still liquid falling thus far at lower elevations. We saw this guy hanging around with a couple of ladies. By the time we could hike to him he laid down for a nap.

    2) He was so comfortable with us moving closer for a portrait shot that he wouldn't even cooperate and open his eyes.

    3) This young lady tried to generate some interest but he didn't seem interested.

    4) How about you?

    5) Hey, chump, you want me to thrash you like this bush?

    This Morning's Moose 2.0

    6) Yeah you better hit the road.

    7) There's plenty for you too puny biped!

The more I look at #1, I begin to appreciate the composition. Lines lead my eye to the bull.

I heading for a week long meander to Boundary waters this weekend....any advice on approaching a randy moose, do I dare using a recorded moose call? (while 20' off shore in my tiny canoe)

My only advice would be that if you are in a boat in water deeper than he can stand in, you're OK. Beyond that, they're wild animals subject to the associated vagaries of each individual. You can learn to read the body language but that only goes so far. I shoot in the same state park area and "get to know" the individual animals a bit and they see quite a few people. And I still do my best to make sure I have an escape plan and carry pepper spray in case things really get out of hand.

In a boat you should be fine.

Thanks for the reassurance, not too worried about it. Just hoping to find some, population is down 50%.

What a nice funny set you have here...your shooting ground is awfully beautiful too with all that background...how far is this scene from your backdoor?

This particular spot was only a couple of miles. We live at the bottom end of the valley where the moose congregate for the rut. The valley is several miles long.
