Some of you might remember that last May, Manfred posted some photos taken at the Hog's Back locks on the Rideau Canal. A few hundred feet east of the locks, the Rideau river flows over a weir into an artificial channel dug during the construction of the locks at what is now known as Hog's Back Falls. This is where I shot these photos.
#1 - View of the channel from the east side of the river looking north. The water level is very low at this time of the year. In the spring, it can reach the top of the cliff seen on the west side.
#2 - View of the channel from the west side. Again looking north. In this shot I tried to capture the rainbow created by the sun reflecting on the mist from the waterfall.
#3 - This one is taken on the west side of the channel. The railing on the left side is the one that you can see on top of the cliff approximately in the centre of shot #1. I love the strong diagonal bottom left to top right created by the rock and extended by the vegetation on the right. It is also nice that the tree on the left hides the highrise appartment building.
#4 - This is one of the many cascading waterfalls on the east side of the channel. This shot is my first attempt a "silky" water. I am not normally fond of the silky look but I think it might work here.
#5 - Finally, because I was there and the light was reasonably good, I could not resist trying this shot!
Slightly different composition than Manfred's - more water, less sky - more subdued and less dramatic light - lit from the left.
I am sufficiently please with this one to come back to it one early morning in about three weeks when the leaves have their fall colors.
C & C always welcomed.
