    Early Fall Colours

Today was our second (and last) day in Algonquin Park. We hike three different trails today, so I certainly felt that I got a bit of exercise. The last of the trails was around Peck Lake, which is one of spots that shows off the fall colours earlier than other areas of the park. We were there in the late afternoon, so the light was starting to become more interesting from a photography standpoint.

While the area was still predominantly green, shades of yellow, orange and red were working their way into the foliage. This made for a nice end on a warm(ish) and sunny, early fall day.

On the other hand, we had an encounter with a black bear a few minutes after this photo was taken. We had left the park and were traveling along Highway 60, when suddenly out of the shadows along the side of the road, a black bear popped out and looked ready to cross the highway. I had to brake quite hard to avoid a collistion and the bear seemed to understand and took off back into the woods, so no harm was done to either the bear or the car.

Sounds like both the foliage and the wildlife were teasing you, Manfred.

Another nice crunchy sharp shot...one can see that you are really enjoying your retirement...You worry about bears and we worry about deers. Both can be hazardous to driving conditions especially at night...a few more weeks and you'd be shovelling snow...God forbid!!!

Actually we worry more about moose too. Hitting one of those would be very damaging to car and animal.

Spotting a bear where we did is actually quite unusual and the area where we live has the highest number of deer collisions in Ontario (due to both high deer and human populations, I suspect). I've almost hit a deer riding my bike a couple of times.
