    Aux Sable River

We spent most of the day traveling along the north shore of Lake Huron (one of the five Great Lakes), and while the lake itself was usually hidden from view by the trees, there was the occasional "gem" along the way.

The Chute Provincial Park is the only one between Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie, and we spent a couple of hours there hiking and taking pictures this afternoon. The name "Chutes" refers to the lumber chutes that the logs were sent down, by-passing water falls and rapids in the 1800's and early 1900's. Sadly there is no more sign of the wooden chutes, but the falls and rapids on the Aux Sable River are still there for us to enjoy...

And the fall leaves are still teasing us. There are some lovely stands of reds, yellows and oranges, but green is still the predominant colour of leaves. Both shots used a polarizer.

Very nice images. IMO #1 has a more energetic composition and the colors are more attractive. I love the small red flowers on the rocks

I'm not to sure about the shutter speed used, it sort of leaves the water in between frozen and silky. Which to me just looks like a blur.

Its pretty distracting in the first image as its right in the bottom corner as well and it keeps attracting my eyes.

That's how I like to see running water. Just a suggestion of milkiness to give the impression of movement without losing the detail. Nice photography.

That was my goal, John. While I do the occasional silky look water, I really am playing around with shutter speeds trying to produce an effect that neither freezes the water nor creates the silky look, i.e. trying to find a happy medium between the extremes that shows motion.

Shutter speeds in the 1/20 - 1/30th range seem to work for this river (and being on a hiking trail means I don't have my tripod along, so these are hand-held.)

I know there are many opinions out there on running water and it is one capture that is highly personal.
