Two Beloved Family Members C&C welcomed

Yesterday I went to photograph a new Police K-9 Class - it was their second week of training. While there, one of the Officers that has allowed me to photograph the class, asked if I would be willing to do him a favor. He said he brought his wife's dog with him; the German Shepherd was having serious health issues and they weren't sure how much longer he would be with them. He said the dog adored his wife and that he wanted to be sure she has a beautiful picture of him. I was honored to do this favor for him.

As a side note, I have figured out how to shoot on aperture priority (rather than manual) with my physical limitations. Thanks to those members (Mike B. esp) who gave me some good ideas. I must say, it's a treat!

It was hard to pick a favorite from the set, but this was one:

He also brought their Golden Retriever to keep him company, so took one of him as well.

They are both nice pics, but that one of the German Shepherd is an absolute beauty. The lighting, the composition, the way the detail is capture. But far more important than any of these is that this picture captures the character and personality of the dog. It's the same as the best portraits of people - they get behind the surface and see 'inside' the subject. Wonderful.

Great shots Kim but I echo Donald's comments, the Shepherd photo is brilliant.

    Nice captures Kim,

It makes all the difference to get down to their height.

    Well done, Dave

Thank you so much Donald. It was important to me that the Shepherd be the stand out dog, so I did make sure his lighting was different and special. I have so many amazing images of him for his owner... which I know they will treasure.

Thank you John. I haven't been enjoying shooting with the 810 lately as it's not very forgiving with the slightest movement; however, I think having it on A priority really allowed me to focus on everything more and stay still. When I get it right, you can't beat the details it brings out.

Thanks Izzie. I didn't spend as much time with the retriever, so he wasn't as comfortable with me.

Two very nice images Kim but the first one is special. Given the potential circumstances, it couldn't really be better.

The shepherd photo is great! Will we be seeing training photos in the future?

Thank you Dean. It depends on what I capture; I photographed obedience when I was there. It was interesting to see the demeanor of the handlers with their dogs. I am interested to see if/how that changes over the next 10 weeks. I am hoping to photograph bite work and the obstacle course work.
