Workhorse of the North

The bushplane; generally a float plane that can land on the many small lakes in the north, is the main commuter vehicle to many northern communities. The floats are often replaced with skis during the winter months.

This small float plane base, which is located on Lake Wawa, primarily services remote hunting and fishing camps.






The dock and aluminum runabout boat are also fixtures of the north.

Hi Manfred,I like the scene and the PP work a lot. I think you are becoming a colorful and contrastful photographer The posts look tilted but may be fixing them would spoil the main scene.

Thanks Binnur. The image is straight as I straighten the shoreline so that it is level. I generally always check my images to ensure that the horizon is level.

Nice shot Manfred. I flew in an Alaskan Bush Plane to a remote fishing lake several years ago. It was a fun trip. The aircraft is a different type from the one you photographed. My plane had a radial engine - see this shot that I made from the aircraft's base on the Kenai River...



This is the only aircraft I have ever flown aboard on which they weighted both the passenger and gear...

Nice shot, definitely captures the feel of the place. I like the lines and the warm tones, the sky looks great.

I noticed a small grey dot above just above the ridge line, to the left of the telecommunication towers in the BG. Is that a drop of water on the lens or, dust on the sensor maybe? Sorry to mention it, my eyes have become used to looking for little problems like that, as I shoot against plain blue skies quite a lot.

Thanks Chris - that's a small dust bunny I missed during the edit. Unfortunately, I'm working on a laptop and I don't always catch them. At home with my 27" display these are a lot easier to pick up.

Looks like a deHavilland Beaver to me. We flew on one when we visited the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary in Northern British Columbia. It was the first time I can remember flying on a plane that might have been older than me. It went into production in 1947 and was in production for about 20 years.



This is the one we flew on.

Great photos, Manfred. I had a flight in one of these out of Ketchikan a few years ago. I was amazed how solid it felt. It was almost like being inside a flying tractor. I like your title of "workhorse" coz that is what they are.

When I first looked at it I thought with a Pratt & Whitney PT-6 engine it must have had a heart transplant somewhere through its life because it's a De Havilland DHC 3 Otter and they had piston engines.

A quick google revealed that the engine change happened around 1999/2000.
