    Abandon ship & domestic bliss

Would like some help to settle a domestic dispute.
This is an image from our recent trip to Hawley House in Northern Tasmania a couple of weeks ago.
This old boat is resting in one of the ponds in the gardens.
My pick is the first image that centres attention on the boat itself and it's reflection, a busy scene none the less. Cindy prefers the second un-cropped version as she likes the large tree on right and the sky element in the photo.
So it is an un-biased vote please note that if you prefer #1 my cropped version I will not rub it in her face. If on the other hand you like #2 Cindy's un-cropped version it will remain a secret between us and I will blame some sort of computer malfunction on the outcome
Seriously though I will owe her dinner out and flowers if her version is more popular, although that is nothing out of the ordinary in the way I spoil her, either way she will get dinner and flowers

Well....I guess we have to be thankful you are not really having a real blue with one another...but sorry, I like #1. Or was that #2 better??? Oh my!! Abandon ship & domestic bliss

Seriously, both have different merits. I like #1 for the close-up and concentration on the boat but #2 is a good overview of what and where it is located. Wherefore, Cindy cannot fault you for being a good photographer. Allow her to take you out for lunch every now and then...

    Why?

Because I don't think there's enough tonal contrast between the boat and its surroundings and, in #1, I feel it gets a little lost, despite the aim of trying to throw more attention on to it.

Because of that lack of tonal variation (which is not itself a bad thing), I think the wider view, that shows us more of the situation/location of the boat in the water makes for a better balanced and more interesting image.

(Ok Cindy, was that what you wanted me to say?)

I like the first but would crop out the upper portion featuring the base of a tree; if into photo manipulation I'd clone it out. Nicely captured.

Dinner and flowers were always on the cards Donald you can never win against the (better) sex
(Cindy will be reading this so I'm keeping in the good books.)
Do you think I should use layers to isolate the boat, keep the colours there and maybe desaturate the background slightly?

Hadn't thought about that, but, yes, that might work quite well.

Re: Abandon ship & domestic bliss

    Hmmm, tricky.

When I viewed the small images in the thread, #2 won my vote.

When I did the 'Right click > View Image' thing and saw them large, I felt #1 held more interest for me.
It would still benefit from some assistance with regard to separation, as has been suggested above.

You can try it: here are the big versions of #1 and #2 to open in new tabs.

I think there's another cropped composition, between the two, that might be better still.

Enjoy the meal and we look forward to seeing some shots of the flowers

    Hope that helps, Dave

I'd go with #1. It is simple. The sunken boat seems to get lost in the business of #2

No.2. Take her out to dinner and buy her the flowers. She deserves it for her excellent judgement and also for showing such interest in your work.
