Shooting at the Rugby world cup

Next week I'll be in Newcastle for the RWC.
Is it possible to bring into the stadium my Pentax DSLR and a couple of lenses?
Do I run the risk to leave my camera at the entrance?

I am quite sure you will have no problem at all. There is nothing on www.rugbyworldcup.com on the subject.

You will not, of course, have any access to the media areas unless you are an accredited photographer, but I do not think there is any reason why you would not be allowed to take your camera into the ground.

The fact is that I'm coming from Italy and I don't have any B Plan in case the DSLR would not be authorised.
Just leave it at the entrance .....

I went two weeks ago with one lens as I was nervous only to get in to find many people walking around with multiple pro lenses! I go to a lot of sport and find the events that really don't want big lenses there are explicit e.g Wimbledon, otherwise I've always been fine (so far!)

Just as an aside - what can you possibly hope to capture from the middle of the crowds that will in any way do justice to the atmosphere, passion and essence of the game?

Take you mobile if you must capture a few snaps as a memory but otherwise leave your camera outside and just enjoy being there.

I would like to use a UWA lens from on top of the rearmost stands. Not to capture the players (IMO you cannot get a decent shot of the game itself from anywhere in the audience) but, to capture the feeling of the entire crowd. This would be extra good if the crowd wears the colors of the teams in the way our college football crowds often do!

These are the type of shots I would like to get.

Especially in a game between University of Southern California (USC) in garnet and gold and their cross-town rivals University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in blue and white...

I would like to attend an afternoon game so I could get both day and night shots!

I am jealous as can be - Rugby & Photography, what could be better!

In the past I went to the Oz Open Tennis Champs... I read the fine print as to what one could & could not take, in the way pf camera equipment.
They stipulated a lens no longer than 200mm.....
I took the 70-200 & the page of their rules.... & a 2x extender, which gate/bag check staff unless photographers themselves, would not worry about.

Oh dear, England is the only home nations country not in the quarter-finals. That's a shame!

If the USA engage with rugby the way in IRF hope it will be the biggest win of all. The ABs have played the US on their home soil. The first time 5000 people at the game got free tickets, last year 62,000 paid handsomely at Soldier Field to watch. As I understand the NZ and Aussie rugby federations are working hard to build interest and they seem to be meeting with some success. The 15-a-side game is the fastest growing sport in the US, and of course they have got into 7s since it became an Olympic sport. If it takes hold it will certainly wake the sleeping giant. Compared to the NFL it is much faster, flowing and less prone to serious injury. Bring it on.

The other big encouragement was the Japanese team. They played with class and heart, and were one of the cleanest teams in the whole event. I am really glad they are set to be in the next RWC.

Go the ABs, and if they lose, then Ozzie, Ozzie Ozzie! LOL... :- )
