    Monochrome Mini Competition #25

Since the aim of these is to get you taking and submitting photos, let see if it can also encourage people to post monochrome (black and white) images, even if that's not in their normal photography 'diet'.

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post MONOCHROME images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum

How do I upload pics. Clicked on something called TinyPics, but don't know where the photo went.

Tweet Tweet, San Luis Obispo, CA - Nikon D90, F5.6, 1/30sec, 200mm, ISO 400 - Had this camera 1 month. Just returned to shooting seriously after 20 years, marriage, 4 kids, etc. A little rusty, I'm sure it shows. Having fun again!

    Bitter Creek

Bit of a problem in that the image is not showing up. Depending on what you're using to upload, you might be seeing it. But if it's checked as 'private viewing only' then it might not show up to the rest of us.

ps - Welcome onto the forum

    Re: Lines...

I went to FAQs and saw this hint - "To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread." Still don't have a clue what to do. I click on what shows up at the top as 'New Post', but I really don't understand what I'm looking at.

Guess I'll blow this off and go to bed. Late in California. I vote for Salvage.

    Okay

Once you wake up, click here. This thread helpfully details all the various options for getting images uploaded, depending on whether you upload directly from your computer to here, or via some other hosting site such as Flickr.

One more time. Does it matter what size? This is only 150kB. I started with 1.5MB, but reduced it.

    Success.

Now, we need Dave to come in on the sizing issues. He's much more knowledgeable than me about these things.

    Hi Bittercreek,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me (and thanks Donald for helping out earlier).

I wouldn't worry about the filesize size too much, although in this case, I do wonder how you achieved the reduction from 1.5MB to 150kB? I hope it wasn't solely through use of the jpg quality setting.

The image info shows your picture as "1,066px × 1,599px (scaled to 467px × 700px)", the last bit means that 467 x 700 is how everyone first sees it here at CiC, which in this case isn't too bad - normally sharpness suffers, but the catchlight in the eye still looks OK.

That means the rest of what I am going to say may seem of little or no benefit, but please bear with me.

The problem with a vertical size that big is that it is larger than most people's vertical screen size in pixels, e.g. mine is 800, which I'm told is small these days, but many will be say 1050. The sharpness of an image can only be critically judged when seen at 100%, i.e. one image pixel = one screen pixel.

Most people accept the image as they first see it, which is fine for assessing composition, but it often looks softer than it should if re-sized on-the-fly lke this; because there is no/minimal sharpening applied after the dynamic downsizing.

Some may click the image, which opens the image in something called a Lytebox, this automatically senses the available screen space and may, under some circumstances (typically if landscape orientation), make it bigger - it helps if they/you use the F11 key to make browser go fullscreen mode (F11 again gets it back to normal). However, this certainly does not gaurantee 100% viewing experience for all.

The only way to see the image at full resolution is to right click it and have it opened in a separate browser tab (or window), on your tall picture, this will almost certainly give scroll bars. Only then can things like noise and sharpness be critically commented upon.

One favour; could I ask for your first name please? I much prefer conversing with a person than a username - thanks.

One last thing, at the top I mentioned jpg quality, my advice for critical web is to use 9 (of 12) or 75% - about 3/4 of whatever scale you're given (in your software).

    Hope that helps,
