    Agawa Canyon

This is a view of the 175m / 575ft high Agawa Canyon, from the lookout that is located about 76m / 250ft above the canyon floor.

The few buildings on the canyon floor are park buildings. The only access to the part is by hiking in from Lake Superior Provincial Park or riding in on the Algoma Central Railways train.

Now that I have done it, I would NOT recommend it to any of my friends and acquaintances.

    1. I think the target audience is someone who has never seen the more northern parts of North America (i.e. city dwellers that never get out of the city). Anyone who spends any time in the outdoors is likely to be disappointed. The 90 minute stop to see some of the sights was not long nearly long enough for us. Others were complaining about it being too long.

Selfie sticks and self portraits seemed to be what most people were interested in taking. The following shot should give you an idea of what the least popular of the sites looked like...

    2. The rolling stock was in poor repair (apparently yesterday's trip had been canceled due to equipment problems). Automatic doors that don't open or close, washrooms with broken latches and soap dispensers that don't work, etc.

    3. Very expensive food on the train (well, I kind of thought the prices would be high, and they were even higher than seemed appropriate). They were ripping off the Americans. They were giving an exchange rate of $1.10 when something closer to $1.30 would have been appropriate.

That might be the right title for the next week or so. We are heading back towards home tomorrow, but are planning one more day of hiking and photography in Algonquin Park. The fall leaf reports suggest 90% colour change and only 10% leaf fall, so we will be getting there at peak or just past peak.

A regular selfie stick will not carry my FF camera or should I use a monopod instead?

Anyway, having travelled quite a bit, I think the exchange rate is usual for tours like this one because they want to take their share in the kitty pot too. As for your image, I find your shot interesting if looked at it in a more expanded view in another tab. The people walking, the outdoor sitting/eating areas and even the train itself is more recognizable. The nearby orange/red trees are most attractive too. I can call the image here in your post without the expanded view, just an overview then. Very nice shot, all clear right to the last leaf.

    Yes - err, ok NO

I have used a monopod with a bridge camera on, using the self timer to be able to get a shot looking down from about 8-9 feet (2.5m) - but I wasn't in shot, so it doesn't qualify as a selfie.

I wouldn't try it with a DSLR though, not even a DX/APS-C, let alone something the weight of FF.

    Back on topic.

Manfred, when I saw that large, complete with trains, I thought "I wanna go", but then I read your third post, so perhaps not.

    Good composition/view there though.

I can understand why tourist would want to visit the area Manfred. It is very picturesque, well done for reaching the high ground to capture this image, well done.

Out of curiosity (I know it killed the cat) how long is the hiking trail to reach this site?

I'd love to know the answer to that question too. There are a lot of places that mention that you can get there on foot from Lake Superior Provincial Park (which we spent a couple of days in), but nowhere do I see a definitive answer to that question. Distance wise, the two are not all that far apart, but in terms of distance from a parking lot at the park to a trailhead of a trail that leads to the Canyon, I have not been able to find any information.

Nice shot, Manfred. Great composition and lovely color (or colour). It's really nice viewed in that wonderfully working light box

Did you work the sky at all? It seems like a bit more texture could be pulled from those clouds.

    With regards to selfie sticks, a climber allegedly got stuck my lightning while using one of these;

I think it was a product of social media.

This site is the closest I come to social media.

I suspect I can, Dan, but the screen on my laptop (which has been calibrated and profiled) is terrible to work with and I will rework some of these images when I get home.

There was a report that last week (or perhaps two weeks ago) that a Japanese tourist died at the Taj Mahal in India when he fell down some stairs trying to take a selfie with a selfie stick. It sounds like the tourist stepped back and hit his / her head on the stone steps.

Nice shot Manfred. Leaving aside the access issues, it does look like a nice place to visit. I get so envious of you people who have all this fall colour to shoot !

Lovely shot Manfred. It almost looks like a miniature landscape...

Whenever, I see a canyon like this with a stream running through and buildings on the banks of the steam, I always thing of the results of a flash flood. However, I guess that this type of flood is more likely to occur in the mountain areas of our far west.
