    Windows 7 Updates--Windows 10 Download

My computer runs on Windows 7. Whenever I try to download recent Windows 7 updates, my computer wants to start downloading Windows 10 but I do not want to download and install Windows 10 yet.

There no longer seems to be a button on the update page to download only the Windows 7 updates I've selected.

Has anyone else run into this issue and perhaps know how to get around it?

    Hi Bruce,

    I am running Windows 7.

A few months ago, in a moment of madness, I clicked to update to Windows 10 "when it became available".

After several weeks, my Windows 7 updates (which I have on automatic install), downloaded Windows 10 and since then, roughly once a week, it brings up the conversion screen when I boot up (says it is ready to go), I just close it and carry on using Windows 7, which also still updates. I gather I have about a year to install free.

My main reason for not completing the upgrade is that I'm a heavy user of Windows Media Center to record TV programmes and I don't want to lose that - apparently Win 10 doesn't have it. At some point, I guess there will be an alternative I can use, so then I'll switch.

    HTH, Dave

    Dave,
How do you record TV programs using Windows Media Center?

    Dave,
Yes, I did exactly what you did.
It sounds like the best thing now is to let it download (but not install) Windows 10 and then it will let me do Windows 7 updates again.

    Yes, mine downloaded automatically.

Just Close the "Lets get Started" dialogs when they pop up.

I have a USB dual Tuner TV stick - I find Windows Media Center is far better than the software that came with the stick to manage the recording schedule (via UK terrestrial 'Freeview' EPG) and recorded programs.

Ditto except that rather than a stick, I have installed a dual tuner card. The beauty of Windows Media Centre is that the installation was plug and play. No downloading of drivers and control software. I'm clueless as to why it is being abandoned because is so user friendly.

Perhaps because it doesn't work like that state-side?

I imagine US (not to mention worldwide) TV distro being rather less 'consolidated' than ours is, due to the geographic distances involved.

Not sure Dave. Certainly in the early days of Windows Media Player, the MS on line help pages were US-centric and the dedicated software for the card I am using, has geographic options in the set up. It's interface however is abysmal hence my reliance on Media Centre.

    Re: Windows 7 Updates--Windows 10 Download

To get back to the original Q however, I am still receiving auto update (last one last evening) however, as a result of this thread I have just visited the Windows 7 update site. It has changed. The first screen solely invites you to download W10 but by clicking "Show all available updates" (in blue beneath the main script), the available W7 updates are shown in the optional listing. Be careful though because the listing also includes the W10 update which unlike the others is automatically selected. You need to deselect it if you just want to update W7. MS are being a bit in your face over W10 and I find it a bit irritating. I will go there when I know it is stable. Currently, some of the industry publications are casting doubt over this. A headline that I read yesterday was: " W10 is a better W7 - if you can get it to work reliably"! Time, I'm sure will make the difference.

Thanks Dave for the tv dual stick. I will research on this, this morning. I see that we have a USB one but I will look some more. On the original posting, I have not installed Windows 10 yet, but I might as I will be buying another desktop soon...for my Christmas present. I'll see how deep the pocket is on Bill's CC... (Don't tell Bill...)

My wife got herself a new cellphone camera thingie after spilling coffee onto her old one ....and recently had let a salesman talk her into 'upgrading' from 7 to 10.
Took some photos of me doing my model railway thing but 10 simply wouldn't see the photos.
Solution ..... come around to my place where I have good and trusty XP and I downloaded them onto a memory stick for her
