    Graphics Card

    Hi Folks,
Will need to get a new computer soon (saving) and was wondering how these cards compare, the first from a Mac the second from the Dell XPS 8700,

ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB

    Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB DDR5

I'm no expert Pat, but it would be useful to know what software you will be using, and to do what.

I am actually wondering whether to upgrade my graphics card to position me to take advantage of the programs being changed to exploit gpu's.

The Dell 8700 comes with the Nvidia GeForce720 1GB graphics card so it sounds like you are already trying to upgrade the standard model, I think you have the capability to make this decision yourself or you have someone helping you. Moving forward, consider what type of programs you plan to install and see if the 2GB memory is enough to handle any robust software. Same goes for the Mac.

I had distinct problems running large files in PS (i.e.with layers) until I fitted a 2GB card. I think that this is because Photoshop uses the installed graphics processor for some of it's processes. It doesn't need to be a high end card. Mine is a 1Ghz passively cooled (quieter) card at about £50.

It really depends on the software that you are running. Image editing is not particularly resource intensive and the higher end graphics cards are mostly used for graphics found in 3-D games. Photoshop makes some use of this functionality when, for instance rotating an image to work on it and a few other fairly minor roles.

I would tend to stick with higher onboard RAM and less processing power on the graphics card, unless you are a gamer.

    Re: Graphics Card

Both photoshop and lightroom can use the graphics card to carry out graphics processing, so a faster card is of benefit. Also important is the memory, 2 gig cards are now common and reduce the possibility of running out of memory during processing of large files
