    Charleston: Cloud over the ocean

I went to Folly Beach near Charleston, South Carolina hoping to photograph a lighthouse at sunset. The light was terrible on the lighthouse but was very attractive in a small area of the sky captured in this scene.

Darn! I was clicking around too much, I lost my reply..Anyway I like the cloud formation here, but it would have been nice to shoot a surfer in that wave...just thinking out loud here...

    Charleston: Cloud over the ocean

    Hi Mike,

I hope you don't mind. But thought, to give more emphasis to its title Cloud over the ocean, a little crop may help.

    Thanks

Thanks for the alternative composition for consideration, Vic, but your version seems too cramped at the top.

Very ominous image. Looks like a hurricane might be approaching.

Hurricane Joaquin never became a direct threat but was near Cuba and about to travel parallel to the east cost of the U.S. before heading out to sea. Even so, the rainfall related to the outermost parts of the hurricane that hit Charleston just several days later was huge. In one day, Charleston had as much rain as 25% of their average annual rainfall. A famous plantation nearby had 24" of rain in one day. Unfortunately, the blood moon had occurred just a few days earlier, so the tides were also at their highest. We left Charleston on Friday afternoon (this photo was taken the previous Monday) and there was so much flooding that weekend in the historic district that people were not allowed to leave or enter it. People were using kayaks and canoes in the streets of the historic district.

You seemed to have been lucky getting out of there while you can...good for you...

It really was both very fortunate and dumb luck. We left according to our planned itinerary as opposed to leaving earlier than planned because of impending inconveniences.

    Missed this yesterday.

That's a very good one, Mike. Love what you've done with the sky and that reflection on the water directly below the cloud is gorgeous

Very nice shot Mike I prefer your original crop. The image looks a bit noisy, but I don't know if you left it as is intentionally.

    Thanks to Donald and Binnur!

There is no noise, Binnur. That's moisture in the air. The ISO is only 500, which doesn't produce noticeable noise on my camera, at least never when the image is presented at the small size displayed here.

I didn't know that the moisture in the air caused such a look, thanks for the info Mike
