    Shouldn't fly but it does.

Just for interest. I saw this poor specimen whilst photographing the hovers last week. You would think that it would be totally incapacitated or at least only capable of flying in circles. However it flitted around just like the others that were in perfect condition. Remarkable!

    Shouldn't fly but it does.

    Fault tolerance

Lets see Airbus or Boeing achieve that

Clearly the designer factored in redundant capacity.

Actually Boeing did. Have a look at http://conservativehideout.com/wp-co...e-wing-002.jpg

But this shot still goes to show the design in that butterfly's brain can overcome the seemingly impossible.
    Thanks for posting.

Well caught, John...this should be an addendum to "Houston, we got a problem..." title from Ziggy's dragonfly shot...

Apparently the butterfly is not burdened by a knowledge of physics. Nice capture, John.

Thanks all. As I said, just for interest. I think you've got it Greg. We sometimes overthink problems. Animals just get on with it. With a relatively short life span, I guess that's all you can do.

    Hello,
Very well observed and photographed. Your background story added a lot to your fine work.
Poor butterfly. Grand that he flew anyway. Nature is remarkable!

If I had spotted that shot, the butterfly would have flown by the time I had my camera ready, well done and well spotted

Thank you Norman. When the sun is out, they sometimes settle. I find that as long as I don't cast a shadow, they will occasionally stay put.

    Well seen and beautifully captured.
