Managed to capture my son Jacob - as you can see he was not very happy - does not like to have his photo taken - ever!

Wonderful B & W conversion. Tell him it's a superb portrait. He's very photogenic, just like his sister. Love the light in his hair.

Joanne - While I like the pose and the composition, I'm not particularly enamoured with the B&W conversion.

There are too many years of "every B&W photograph must include values that are pure black and pure white, otherwise the exposure is incorrect" from my wet darkroom days.

If you don't do that (similar to setting the black and white point in a colour image), the image looks muddy. While I understand that these "standards" that came from the publishing industry have loosened in the digital age, it is still something that I look for in a monochrome image.

While the shot contains pure black, there is no white in this shot. If this were my shot, I'd also look at a bit of a harder contrast to match the subject material (male with an attitude).

Unfortunately, my un-calibrated monitor is showing some red in the lips, the nose and the cheek - which rather spoiled it for me, sorry. Otherwise, a very nice composition reminiscent of those James Dean brooding shots . .

Very nice, right down to the lighting in the hair.

I love the image and the conversion Joanne I would brigthen the very black parts in the BG though as they distract a bit.

Excellent portrait of a handsome lad!

My slight problem with the conversion is that it doesn't provide separation between the subject and the background.

I selected his face and brightened it a tad and also added some contrast. I also added some structure globally. What do you think?

Love it - it makes him look more rugged and handsome - well I think he's handsome

I'm seeing that too, with the same result. Shame, as its a great composition.
