Sigma 10-20 3.5 or Tamron 15-30 2.8

Hay everyone....

Looking for some advice on which leans to get.... I currently use a Nikon D750, and have a Tamron 24-70 lens which I love. I was looking to get a wider lens for some landscape shots and was wondering on the two you see in the title and hope to get some solid advice.

The Sigma 10-20mm 3.5

or

The Tamron 15-30mm 2.8

I got told by a gentleman in a shop to avoid the Tamron but he couldn't back his case up when asked why so I'm not sure which one to go for, the Sigma is half the price of the Tamron and does have that slightly wider view but the Tamron does have a lower f-stop. It would be great to here peoples options and thoughts and if you have used these Lens even better. Really I would love the Nikon but 14-24 2.8 but unfortunately well outside my price range. Or if there are any others that someone might recommend I'm all ears.

One - I wouldn't worry about the f3.5 v f2.8 issue. How often are you going to be wide open with a lens like that?

Two - Do you want something that goes to 10mm, or do you feel 15mm is wide enough for you? That's a key question. When you get down to being that wide, there is quite a difference between 10mm and 15mm.

Three - I had the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and it was a superb lens. I see Tokina now has a 12-28mm f4. If that's built to the same quality as the 11-16 and produces the same quality images (which I don't know as I haven't looked at any reviews), then it would have to be a serious player in the game.

That Sigma is a dx lens and that explains the price difference

As Mike said the Sigma is a DX lens and while you can technically use it on a FX body in crop mode it is kind of pointless investing in a lens that isn't fully suitable - people tend to only use DX lenses as they have some left over from a previous DX based system.

You have a full-frame camera (FX). Putting a crop frame lens on it would not make a lot of sense to me, so I would not suggest going for that lens. Your camera body would detect the DX lens and set the camera to crop mode, which essentially means your images running around 10MP rather than the full 24MP you paid for

The Tamron 15-30mm is a full frame lens so would be more suitable for your camera as it is a full-frame FX lens.

James, as everyone has told you, that lens is for APS-C sensor cameras - size "DC" in Sigma-speak.

In Sigma zoom lenses, they do make a full-size "DG" (135 format) model, well two actually, in 12-24mm size:

I would research the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Lens in a Nikon mount.

Although I don't have experience with this specific lens, I do use a 12-24mm F/4 Tokina on my Canon crop cameras and think very highly of it. Apparently others have high opinions of the 16-28mm as indicated by the reviews on B&H.

My Tokina is built like a tank and image quality is great.

Another thing that might or might not be impostant to you is the price. The Tokina lens is half the price of the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens: $589 USD for the Tokina vs. $1,199 USD fot the Tamron (B&H New York prices).

One thing I'd like to mention... When I use my 12-24mm Tokina, I usually shoot at smaller f/stops; most often around f/8 to f/16. The performance of my UWA wide open is not of as great a concern as it would be for my mid-range zoom (I use the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS). I want very sharp imagery throughout the entire the mid-range focal range.

Of course, there are also the excellent Nikon lenses to consider. I have the f/2.8 14-24mm lens and when you get into the ultra-wide angle lenses, even a mm wider focal length does make a BIG difference. The only real downside to that lens is that it will not take any filters (not really an issue to me).
