Charleston: Cypress Tree & Knees
This photo of a cypress tree and its knees was taken in the Audobon Swamp Garden located on the grounds of Charleston's Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.
The covering on the water surface is duckweed, not algae, though when presented in color it is green and looks at a glance like algae to the uninformed like me. Duckweed is one of the world's smallest flowering plants. It is a tiny, free-floating and seed-bearing plant that grows in dense colonies on calm water. Each of its fronds is approximately 1/16" (.42 cm) in length. The presence of duckweed indicates that a pond is healthy. Duckweed filters water to keep it clean. It also provides an important habitat and food source for aquatic animals and waterfowl, especially ducks.
For those who tend to think of a classic landscape focal length as being in the range of 24mm to 35mm, consider that this photo was taken with a 300mm lens mounted on a camera that has a 1.5 crop factor.
