Some more nature, macro this time: we're in Pennsylvania staying with family for the Fourth of July weekend: that's why I've been quiet the last day and a half or so.

My mom has some nice flowers for attracting bees. I took some shots this morning that didn't work so well because of the light. So this afternoon, when the flowers were in the shade, I set up some lighting: a pair of light stands, one with an EX430 through an Opteka diffuser, and one with an EX580 through an umbrella, both fired via RF triggers.

There were some reasonable shots from the morning, with the sunlight and fill flash, but these are better. Part of it is the light, part of it is because of getting a better composition, imitating things seen here, especially Jim's macro shots.

I'd appreciate C&C.

Bit of a mixed bag today. I spotted the "screwy thing" in a neighbour's garden during "morning walkies" ... the harsh shadow caught my eye. Anyone know what it is?



This complex is officially known as the MDF Plant (where they manufacture Medium Density Fibreboard), but we used to tell our kids it's where clouds are made ... so it's become known in our family as "The Cloud Factory".



And finally ... should be high tide at sunset here tomorrow or the next day, but there's a possibility that the weather won't be co-operating ... so I thought I try again tonight (notice that I even tried a higher camera elevation this time!).

A few years ago, we went out to Tora, which is on the East coast of the North Island, out from Martinborough. There was a wonderful old house there, quietly moldering away. We re-visited today and it has definitely moldered a whole lot more.

Colin - the screwy thing is typically used up the other way and is screwed into the ground. You can then tether a goat, dog, husb...no, not that...to the loop to keep them off the porch. Or out of the kitchen. Whatever.

I kinda thought so -- I used to have one as a kid for tying grazing sheep to, but it was only about 1 foot long ... this one is about 3 feet long -- it didn't think they made them that long (suitable for elephants troublesome husbands!).

I think this version says so much more. Maybe the fact that the tide is higher does contribute too. But I have to confess, I think the poisitioning of the bench in the image, works better .

To be honest, I'm in two minds about it. I definately like this second version better - but most of that comes from a better sky; the bench does a good job of covering the cruddy mud with this version, but the tide was still out, and I'm wondering if a full tide & a good reflection will be a game changer again. I might go for the higher elevation, but position the camera a bit further to the right a-la the first shot; the two shots were actually quite different in their setup, with the 2nd being less wide angle (ie "zoomed in more"), but the camera positioned further back.

Fingers crossed for the next couple of days!

Not real good, but I wanted to get them before it hit the shop and got taken apart

Neighbor kid, 17 years old ran his first race last night. Ran first until two laps before the finish, then threw the timing belt. Note that one of the other drivers got a little "up close and personal" on his left rear quarter panel.







I'll get out and try for some fireworks tonight. Nearest ones are about 20 miles away, so ...

Busy day today and didn't get a chance to consider anything, but I was near St Phillips Cathedral in Birmingham and had 5 mins before the service stated to shoot the west window. Manual blending of 3 bracketed shots (4 stops).

Used my Canon 7D with sigma 50mm lens

I haven't taken advantage of the close focusing capability of my 300mm f/4L IS lens. I tried this grab shot of a rose in my garden hand held. 1/640 second, f/6.3, ISO 400.

I would have normally used a tripod or monopod and stopped down to about f/11 or even f/16 for this type of shot but, I wanted to see how I could do hand holding. The image was moving a bit in the virewfinder (even with IS turned on but, I did see the difference when I turned it off) so I decided to shoot at a bit higher shutter speed. BTW: at my age (70) I need more help hand-holding than I did at 50 years old.

I have previously done OK hand holding this lens on more distant objects.
