Jesus Grahame, you could of put a warning in the title

I'm not a huge fan of spiders but these are good shots, I love the eyes... make it seem quite friendly

Oh well captured Grahame, these are tricky little beasties to capture which you have done very well. The eye's have it but.... maybe just a little toning down of the ring flash catchlights ?

They've got to be viewed at full size in the lightbox. Just amazing. The detail is wonderful.

Sorry Matt, I'm not keen on big spiders but this was only around 10mm across

I have not yet worked out how to gauge their friendliness other than how long they stick around

Thanks Peter. This was one of the easiest I have shot to date and only jumped on the camera once.

With respect to the catchlights for info these are from twin SBR200s on the front of the lens that I had fitted with home made kitchen towel paper diffusers. I'll try toning them down to see what they look like.

    Well thanks Donald.

The D800 is really starting to surprise me with the ability to be able to crop to around 50% of the frame and not even have to consider noise at ISO400 compared to the old D300.

I'm finding the same about cropping with my Canon 5DS. As you know I like a square format. When I crop to that, I've still got a file that's almost 6000 pixels on each edge. Just amazing. The 5DS isn't, I don't think, in the same category as the 7DMkII when it comes to noise. But it's not meant to be. It's a different animal altogether.

    Cheers David...

It's great having a new toy to explore, I just wish I had more free time at present to put it through its paces.

Cheers David, yep, the two small SBR200s.

I also used a 20mm tube after finding that my 36mm will not work on the D800, it loses both VR and aperture readout function, need to get the tools out tomorrow

Heck Graham, I didn't think you could better your previous shots but these are superb. Spiders are not my favourite insect at the moment having just been bitten by one. We don't have any really venomous species in the UK thank goodness but they can still leave their mark.

Hi Grahame, that's strange the 36mm wont work? you will have fancy gear

I have the Canon version of your flash the MT-EX 24, I have taped some kitchen roll over the heads, it does not look great but does the trick for diffusion

    Cheers David...

Spiders scare me; however, no denying these are great shots.

Thanks John, luckily we have no venomous ones here but I have seen one around 8 inches wide with legs spread, now that was scary.

I find it strange David because it's fine on the D300 with the same lens

What I like about the SBR200s or MT-EX 24s is that you can very easily angle light from above and below if circumstances allow. But I'm still not convinced they are really much better than the makeshift single units with polystyrene/cardboard snoots with tissue/paper diffusers.

    Cheers Grahame
