    Night Photography In the Rain.

I have been wanting to do some night photography for some time after seeing some great images on this site. While I was in Copenhagen, I managed to get out one evening after a rain shower. Both Fuji X plus Samyang 10mm.

    1. Foot/Cycle bridge over the main waterway (I kept calling it the river but of course it's the sea).

    2. In the opposite direction the cycle path rises up on a flyover to connect with the main road.

I like your shots. Maybe convert to B&W. I find that night photography and water works well. That is only my opinion.

Very nice indeed, I agree with Binnur, the lines in the second are terrific, an absolute cracker!

On that second one, a bit of a rhetorical question - Why do we have the left-hand side of the picture? What is it contributing to the overall image?

I pose those questions because of how wonderful the right hand side of the image is. Open it in the lightbox and move the image so that most it disappears on the left side of the monitor, so that you're left with a (approx) 4:5 portrait orientation. What do you think?

I love how the light from the side rails is dripping down the sides of the flyover bridge.

Thanks all for your comments. Now that the nights are drawing in, I will try to get out some more. I enjoyed making these.

Ole, I originally dismissed mono as a thought but your comment has prompted me to try a conversion. It needed some additional processing but I like the result and I will post them when I am happy with the processing.

Donald, good question that should always be asked and I did after making the image (see below), However after settling period I always allow myself before posting an image, in comparing the two, the answer is I just liked the posted version more. Why? No idea.

Sometimes you've just got to go with gut instinct and know that it's right.

Donald, now you can see both together, what's your preference?

The important thing and, indeed, the only thing that matters, is what your preference is. As for me, I notice that you cropped at the right hand side on the second version. I think that maybe moves the edge of the flyover too close to the edge of the frame.

But, in general, they're both very strong images. Overall, as a cityscape, your original is probably my preferred image. Just as a picture of light and lines, I'd go with the crop. In other words, two different presentations produce two very different images, both of which are good.

The two versions are strong in very different ways, so much so that I don't have a preference for one over the other.

Nice shots, I prefer the original crop myself.

I love the pattern on that building and its almost a reflection on the ground.

I thought I prefer#1 (and still do) because I can easily understand what I am looking at. The second one is a little bit difficult (despite your explanation but I like the wet look). The edit made me realized what it really is. Why, I have no idea...must be the coordination between my eyes and brain thing and listening to Rush Limbaugh at the same time...

What appeals to me about the original version of #2 is that the black and white squares on the wall of the building are reiterated in the light and dark wetness of the paving squares. It is present in the 2nd version too, but is more apparent in the earlier one.

Greg, that's well analysed. It hadn't struck me before but that may be why the original appealed to me although I was not conscious of what it was that made me feel that way. I sometimes have a "If it looks right it probably is right" approach to composition.
