Squall on the Juan de Fuca Strait

Renaissance... Many years ago, in the almost prehistoric age of transparencies, I sold photos of scenery and wildlife as I traveled around Australia and New Zealand. Now 33 years older, and in the digital age, this is my first tentative exposé as a photographer undergoing their own journey of relearning the craft. Now settled for most of the year in Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada, I carry a camera almost everywhere I go, and this is a chance image taken on a coastline walk. The view is across the Juan de Fuca Strait towards the US Olympic Peninsula where a storm was brewing. Victoria lives in a "Goldilocks Zone", often surrounded by storms but in a little patch of calm and sunshine.

You make a good point Jack! Actually, I have given up on producing prints, I configure my photos to use a digital display: either on my computer, or on one of several TV screens I have set up as my artwork on the walls. The price for a 32" screen is about the same cost as framing a photo, but I have the advantage of the backlit image, and I can change the image daily if I so desire for no extra cost!

This image would be very nice without the ship. Even so, the ship absolutely makes the image. Very effective to place it dead center.

Thank you Mike. Four things determined the location of the ship... First, I had determined to make the resolution 1920x1080 to match the proportions of my screen, this dictated the width of the image. Then the desire to isolate the storm within the frame, having a bit of non-squally sky on each side. Third I wanted the right side of the image to end at the peninsula as it met the sea. Last, I wanted the ship to be dwarfed and isolated on the image by the weather - I liked the way the light lit up the sea on either side of the ship, yet where the ship was it was dark.

To answer your question: I have used 3x 32" screens, resolution 1080P (1920x1080), of mixed brands. They are slim-line LED screens that have HDMI, USB and SD card interfaces, and all have WiFi and remotes. I hid the power and network cables in the walls behind them. I can set them to change the image at various intervals (I would not set at more than a day to avoid the risk of image burn-in) and to turn off at night when no-one is watching them.. It would be pointless to nominate a brand and model as these change daily and by location! I hope this helps.
