    A rainbow and the morning moon...for C&C

'Been processing some more of my trips to Grant's Farm and this rainbow was one of them...I just thought it looks good with the autumnal background with it...I've removed some halloween caricatures along the pond but there is one at the bottom right that I cannot remove...

    A rainbow and the morning moon...for C&C

Morning Moon...this morning as I sip my warm glass of water by the deck, I saw this moon near the curve of our tree by the fence. I took 8 shots in different angles but soon narrowed it down to this one...this is my first skyscape and it was early in the cold morning...of autumn. I freezing from head to toe...

And so just like me nowadays, I want to get to into serious Black and White, I tried one conversion...this one...

    A rainbow and the morning moon...for C&C

I will appreciate any comments...and critiques of course...Thanks...

Like all three. How much did you boost the saturation?

Love that rainbow, Izzie. I also like the simplicity of the last two, they have a Japanese feel to them - to me. As I don't know much about B&W, the only thing I would say about #3 is I wonder if the moon might have some more presence - brighter?

I had a try at removing the Halloween character at bottom right:

If you don't like it, just let me know and I'll remove it.

Wow love all 3 but that first one is so cool. Wish I had taken it.

Like Dave I am envious of the first shot as I have never been lucky enough to be in a situation like that But why the pre-occupation with B&W or is it a 'modern craze' that everybody tries to do?
The moon shot cries out to me to be a simple two exposure stack shot with both objects in focus. Having red OOF in the foreground just doesn't work and the grey conversion is horrible. I simply clicked on my 'grey scale' button and got a better result without trying any of the other ways of doing it.
If you are going to include the OOF leaves then a quite different composition is needed so that they do not overpower the moon.

Perhaps that is the solution to the colour version too though it still remains 'Two" subject shot and 'what are we supposed to look at?'

Another option comes to mind .... desaturate the foliage so it doesn'r fight the moon for attention ...
Duplicated the image/ magic wand picked out the blue sky and added the bright part of the moon and the but of sky enclosed by foliage .... deleted all of that .... desat the foliage.
Next came the 'fancy' bit ... didn't like the desaturated foliage so reduced the density of that layeer and let through some of the colour ... final sharpening and here it is with definitely the moon grabbing attention

I second that and would also like to know how you boosted the rainbow.

Actually, none in ACR and about 5% or less in Viveza 2, but I upped the vibrance of the overall image globally in ACR, about 24%? I am not sure...but it is high. When I do a high vibrancy, I barely touch the saturation.

Thank you for commenting...I am glad you like them...

No...no...I like it very much. I just thought it is was not worth removing as I had removed a lot of halloween stuffs already which to me looks garish and spoils the scene. Thank you for the edit. It is very, very good...I love it...

About the moon, I am just trying to get into the neck of it so I do not really have much experience to say so...or do. I just do and if it looks good, then it is good -- unless someone criticized it, then I will read and learn so to speak...

Thanks again, Chris...your help is valuable...I do appreciate it very much.

Thanks John...I thought of the same thing as soon as I saw the upload from my hard disk so I went back to reshoot and the moon had disappeared. That quick! I will not do the same mistake again...maybe I should had shown another funny shot at Grant's Farm instead of that moon... I was so fascinated by the scene that it took me so long to get my camera inside and change my lens and all that. No shot-wonder this one...

Thanks for the critique and the comments. I do appreciate it very much. I am glad you like the first one...

See my reply to Jack in message #8. I think just removing the halloween distractions were hard enough...I was just at the right place at the right time there...it was nearly 4pm and I really do not like to be out of the house in the afternoon around that time as I feel so itsy pansy I cannot cook dinner for my family. We were passing by that area because I want to go back to the pushy hungry camels when I saw this one...luckily there wasn't any photographer or cell-phoners amongst the crowd, would you believe that? So I have a lot of room to shoot...

I appreciate your passing by and commenting. I am glad you like that shot too...Thank you.

Re: A rainbow and the morning moon...for C&C

My initial reaction was disappointment ..... but only because I expected (illogically) to see the moon and rainbow in the same photo.....

    I love them all

Re the moon and foreground, I haven't tried focus stacking yet but it's true this would be a perfect (and probably relatively easy) situation to start with. Meantime what I usually do is is try to take the moon with some more distant object as foreground, then the same focus usually works for both. It also has the advantage that the distant object looks smaller which makes the moon look bigger.

I love your rainbow, but I do prefer the second shot. The colours are 'out there' which is great fun.

Love the rainbow through the water mist Izzie, good one. I'm sure that with a bit more work your colour shot of the moon with foreground tree it has scope for further improvement I'm going to play with it when I get some time.

The rainbow is a bit bright for me, but a nice shot never the less.

I prefer the second moon shot myself... the moon is nice and sharp which is the main thing!
