Where I'm going OR an interesting mistake?

Firstly, I'm not posting this because I think it's a decent image, but one of those captures that comes out of the camera and makes you think about it. But for those that consider its of interest the title's 'Where I'm going'

I had been sat on my tyre on the foreshore, camera on tripod shooting seascapes after sunset and suddenly spotted this boat on its way back in.

The camera remained on the tripod and I would have been attempting to frame/pan the boat, consider settings etc when I must have pressed the shutter. The only PP done was to reduce the exposure.

Mistakes can very often prove to be very interesting. This is an example of that. I like how it has come out.

Me too Grahame...it looks more like an intended Daisy Mae shot...artful.

The boat is going to the right. It has its engine at the back and rises its nose (or whatever you boat people call it) as it goes.

Someone here (sorry can't remember who) was experimenting earlier this year with deliberately moving the camera during exposure. I liked some of those and like this and keep meaning to try something similar myself.

Definitely an interesting shot, Grahame and it certainly works. What I find interesting about these "oops" shots is trying to replicate the technique so that I can learn how do put the technique into my "bag of tricks" so that I can pull it out again at some other time. The other part of this type of shot is to now go wild in the PP side to see what can be done with it there.

Nice effect Grahame, it lacks a bit of colour, have you tried it in black and white?

Nice one Grahame. I did something similar recently where, through error, I took a pic of a duck in flight at SS 1/25. It turned out with a similar effect as your image here. Someone asked how I did it and I told them it took a lot of practice and skill

Donald, Izzie, Dem, Rachel, Manfred, Christina, Matt and Rita,

Thank you each for commenting on this somewhat unconventional result from the camera

I think a lot more artistic work goes into Daisy's productions than this SOOC effort Izzie

Yes Dem, we call the nose a bow and the boat is 'on the plane', that is that the forward end is not in the water. This gives less hull resistance, hence greater speed and a smoother ride

I recall those images Rachel and now you have prompted me to also give that a go.

Replicating it will be an interesting experiment because although I know the settings (speed) I am not sure if I was panning at the time and am still a bit confused about the cause of the ghosting forward of the boat movement.

I have now played a bit with the PP but my preference has been to return to almost as it came out of the camera.

And dreamy I have tried to retain Christina

I tried B&W Matt, but I just love those muted colours.

Good one Rita, but if I'd have done that someone would have asked for the technique and I would not of had a clue in this case

So after some further playing I have come up with this and will be back at the same location to see if I can replicate the results soon.

I like this second version, Grahame. The colour makes all the difference for me. ICM can be very hit and miss, but when it works it can yield fascinating results. ... (And, it is addictive even if a bit frustrating.)

+1 to Christina... and to add, maybe on a normal photograph, if you add motion blur you will achieve the same effect??? just sayin'...

Definite improvement on the second one Graham, more colour coming through.

This image is so good that I especially look forward to that! My only misgiving about the two versions is that I wish there was at least a little more negative space on the left side.

Re: Where I'm going OR an interesting mistake?

I love the second version Grahame (I was a bit 'meh' about the original), the subtle colours, enhanced by the white borders, really make the picture.

I do tend to agree with Mike, a small gap between boat and frame on left would be preferable - if that could be achieved in PP by canvas stretch and cloning - the difficulty being to get a believable 'end' to the boat - or 'stern' as the boat people call it

Thank you Greg, agree the colour is preferable in the second one. I had a go at some deliberate ICM this evening so far the accidental wins !

Adding motion blur in PP is something I have not played with yet Izzie, perhaps one day

That was about as far as I could push it Matt but I'm wondering if that yellowish area on the hull needs desaturating.
