    2 Abstracts

EDIT: I have been informed that these are not abstracts So I am now claiming they come under fine art photography

We are having the worst weather we've had this year so I've taken the opportunity to try some different stuff.

Here is two versions of the same image, taken in my car as I was driving to work this morning... I would love to hear peoples views and which one they prefer, if any!

    Re: 2 Abstracts

The second has more of an abstract feel, although it's clearly recognizable because I've viewed the first. The first image doesn't really strike me as an abstract; more of a dream state.

Not too sure exactly what constitutes an "abstract" in the photographic world, but if it is something that visually does not form a recognisable physical entity, how about this as a candidate:

    2 Abstracts

There is a prize of a post saying "Well done" to the first person who identifies what this is ...

I prefer the 2nd version, Matt, because removing the colour removes it a little bit more from reality and I think that is the effect you are after.

We had an interesting discussion about this recently in this thread. I copied an extract from a reference cited by Janis in the thread (http://www.naturephotographers.net/a.../dw0209-1.html):-

"Abstraction is really about learning to see the basic visual building blocks within your subject (line and shape, form and colour) and then arranging these components in pure design", but rather than 'line and shape, form and colour', I would write, 'line, shape, tone and texture'.

"There seems to be a common misconception in photographic circles that abstracts are pictures where the object photographed cannot be readily identified. Indeed, I just read a quote from a well-known photographer that stated, "If it is recognizable as an object – it is not an abstract." Does this mean if I can identify the object that was photographed then the image is not an abstract? But if someone else cannot identify the object, then the image becomes an abstract? Does this mean abstraction is viewer dependant?"

Thanks for the reference Donald. Whether on not it qualifies as "abstract" I hope folks have fun trying to identify what the object in the photo is

    Re: 2 Abstracts

Matt, I think that #2 is far more abstract than #1 is. #2 is also far more mysterious.

Bill, I think your image is the side of a metal pot that has indents in it. The colour is coming from reflections.

    Re: 2 Abstracts

It seems to me that the"abstract" exists only in thought and has no physical or concrete existence. For this reason the abstract must exist only in the real of concepts i.e. love, beauty, which can vary from individual to individual.
A novel, a poem or a painting can exist in the realm of the abstract since they can exist without any relation to any physical form and deal only with ideas and emotions. But a photograph is always a copy or reflection of something concrete and so it might be better describe as a reflection, in MHO2 Abstracts

I like the second image best, Matt...

And Bill, I think your image is that of a metal/fabric punched out by a hole punch.

It's the cooling collar at the top of a stainless steel fermentation tank in a winery!

I wouldn't have guessed because I do not drink anything spirit nor alcoholic...nor get involved in the process of making any. Thanks ... so I must content myself to not having any prize, whatever that was...

    Re: 2 Abstracts

    Hi Izzie

The "clue" is nothing to do with the application (a wine fermentation tank) but the pattern. The indents / dimples on the surface are to increase the surface area and thereby increase the effectiveness of the cooling.

No matter what your explanation, I am still asleep by the side of that tank... I will tank out myself to bed soon...it is bloody freaking cold here in Missouri.
