My First Buck During Bow Season!!

I haven't been doing much photography lately since Bow Season started on October 1st. All the hard work paid off because I was finally able to tag my first buck yesterday. A 200 lb, 8 pointer. Called him right to me and it was a 10 yard shot through both lungs. Gonna be eating well for the next 6 months!!

PS - This was the FIRST TIME I've ever gone hunting without bringing my good camera. Sorry that this was with a cellphone if that matters.

    Congratulations!

As for the food, I sure do envy you the day you eat the tenderloin, my favorite cut of venison. I have tenderloin of some farm-raised deer from New Zealand in my freezer and can't wait to serve it on a very special dinner in December with friends.

Nice job! A beautiful, fat buck. Good eating. Will you butcher him yourself, or have him butchered?

I have them butchered. I field dress them myself obviously but other than that I have the butcher do his craft on them. The only other thing I do after the butcher is done is cut the steaks down into jerky. I got a little over 100 lbs of meat off of this Buck and decided that 15 lbs was going to be jerky strips. Still leaves plenty to work with for dinner over the next year when counting my doe from earlier this season into the mix.

If I have ever eaten the meat of deer in the wild, it was so long ago as a young child that I don't remember it. Have you ever eaten the meat of farm-raised deer, which is what you would be served in a restaurant? If so, can you tell a difference in flavor or texture from wild deer?

I've only ever had hunted deer meat. It's fat free, forest fed and butchered to my liking. I can't imagine farm raised tastes as good since the deer aren't running or participating in the normal rut etc. The deer that are farm raised might be more tender since they aren't building muscles in the wild. In this case I say go organic all the way and hunt your own.

Now I am envious ...the last time I went hunting with the boys (or kids) was over a year ago or something...and I love participating the preparation and the smoking and yakking...Actually the one that we took home was shot by a 13 year old. She is a good shot as always...

I feel a bit the same but I certainly love venison. I don't suppose I can have it both ways.

There was a kid about the same age who took a record breaking Buck here at the beginning of the season. Thing was a monster. Most hunters won't be so lucky in life and this kid bagged him on his first hunt.

So besides the bragging rights afforded posting here, can we assume that you will likewise be sharing steaks and/or roasts? Is there a signup sheet? Congrats on the buck and a freezer of venison.

Nice shooting and congrats. That sure is a big bodied deer. Seems more of his nutrition went into his muscles rather than the rack. That one will eat good for quite a while. I'm still waiting for the ducks to show up in bigger numbers here before my fun begins. I love organically raised food, whether it walks or flies.

Right now I'm handing out bags of jerky to the neighbors. I got over 100 lbs of meat from the buck and I got about 40 lbs from the doe I got on October 3rd. If I get one this weekend I'll be good for a long while.

I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.
