    Hay implement

I came across this old farmers hay implement this afternoon while taking a drive west of the city. The sun was minutes from dropping below the horizon so I didn't have much time to decide what I was going to do.

My wife likes this image but I find it a little too busy.

    I prefer this one.

Both have potential, very animated looking presentation.

    Agreed.

I might like the first image even better if you had had a ladder to stand on to get you a bit above the fence. However, I like the fence because of the context it provides. So, I wouldn't want to eliminate it, especially considering that you already have a photo that does eliminate it.

Dave - I'm voting with your wife as well. While the first one may be a bit busier, I prefer the composition and processing of the shot. Somehow it has this solid earthy look and feel to it, with the machine sitting there amongst those autumn colours.

While the second one is a good shot as well, but I find the crop a bit tight and the colours a bit over the top.

I like the first, as it gives a better impression that the machine is old. (Or is it the farmer that is old? )

    Cheers.

Sorry, Dave, but I am with your wife too. I prefer the first shot. Besides that, there is some odd lighting in the upper left of the sky in the 2nd shot.

Now, if you think we're going to disagree with your wife, you're crazy!!

I know what you mean, but the whole thing has a nice mood and atmosphere. I like the composition on the second, but it's needs to be more downbeat. It's an old derelict combine (beautiful, by the way, and I'm sure some agricultural museum would love to have it.) and I think the mood should be darker and more sombre.

I like the composition and the wide angle feel in #2, but the rendering looks a bit too aggressive to my eye.

I like them both. I think the sky is a little overdone in the second one and a little under done in the first.
The fence suits the scene in the first and the more complete view of the machine in the second is more enlightening of the overall shape.

I like them both and +1 to Graham's comments. He just nailed how I feel about the two images...a bit of this, less on the bit of that...

Sorry to say -- but your wife has good taste. Is she a photographer too? Sometimes, an outsider's preferences is a good sounding board...

Thank you everyone for the comments. I told my wife most people here prefer the one she picked so she is quite happy with herself
