    I'm flattered Rob, but I'm afraid that I'm already taken. Plus, my Canon and I are very happy together!

    Sorry, but I only see five:
    Putting around...
    Run, Jessie, run
    Yesss, I rule
    Jessica & Ellie
    Hair emergency

    It seems the interesting one is missing

    I think pBase glitched before (I had the same issue). Try holding down the ctrl key while you press F5.

    Hi, Kit;

    This is a wonderful shot. I agree with Donald and Rob about the crop and hint of distortion, and I do definitely like the B&W better. Great mood, very evocative.

    One minor comment: maybe clone out the pole that appears above roughly the center of the building. Not that it doesn't fit with the image, but it's unconnected and it isn't necessary to tell the story, and I found that I looked at it, trying to figure out what it is. So I think perhaps that having it there is a net negative.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    Hi, Colin;

    My favorite is the "I rule" shot. It's a wonderful candid shot, and perfectly captures the delight she's feeling in playing the game. The pose also perfectly echoes the way adult athletes appear on TV, which can either be viewed cynically as imitation by her, or idealistically as the adults just continuing to do what they did as kids.

    The background is a bit distracting, but hey, it's candid: the exposure is excellent in the circumstances. I see shadow that I assume is fill flash, very well done.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    Gimme shelter

    This is an old war-time lookout shelter on my nearest beach (a few miles from the house). Day 10, eh? Doesn't time fly.

    Hi, Jeroen;

    The bicycle shot is my favorite in this group: excellent exposure, and a great mood. Very well done.

    Jumbo - probably a 747-400

    Day 10: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

    Nikon D5000 + Nikon 70-300mm: 1/2000s f/8 at 300mm, iso400

    I'm not very happy with this; shot from too far away in an unclean atmosphere, but at least it isn't a macro today - although I did do some bee/moth shots (with this lens), I'll try to resist the temptation to bore you with them here.

    Whan I see Jeroen's bicycle shot, I wonder why I'm posting this tat

    Thanks Rick,

    Yeah - it was really just a bit of a record of a fun day ... not trying for professional quality

    The sun was about as contrasty and pretty much as bad as it gets ... in the end I knocked the ambient exposure back at least a stop, sometimes close to 2 ... and had to work the FEC a bit too (usually at around +1) ... it kept me quite busy as we were in / out / 1/2 in 1/2 out of the shade all the time ... plus I was trying to beat by #1 daughter (when she added up the scores she got 58 strokes for her, and 60 for me, but when I added them up I got 59 each ... Hmmmmm).

    I agree, the air plane looks good to me . Most of the time I just happen to stumble up an opportunity for a nice shot. Thank you for your reply and I'm sure what you're posting here on the forums isn't just "tat".

    @ Rick &Rob,
    Thank you for your positive critics on my shot. The mood/ atmosphere is what directly appealed to me when I entered the room with the bicycle and I'm glad I could translate this affectively in the photo.

    Jeroen, as Rob said on another day, you really have a gift. You would certainly do well studying photography. But I don't think it's surprising how many people on the forum do some kind of engineering as a day job, and I don't think it's because cameras are machines. The best engineers are creative people who always look at things in 2 or 3 or 10 different ways, and look for the solutions ("the mood appealed to me") instead of applying rules. I predict you're going to be a heck of an engineer.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    No sunset tonight. I did see a Monarch butterfly flitting about the cats' happy bushes. I didn't get the Monarch, but did get another intruder.

    Well done, Rob: I know this kind of thing is hard to capture, and you got the angles, exposure, and a piece of the "real world" very nicely.

    Very nice, Dave: the atmosphere may be hazy, but you got the shot just right. Beautiful colors.

    Completely agree with that, and I've been thinking the same thing myself recently. I think to be a good photographer there has to be a little bit of the 'control freak' in you. I don't mean that in a pejorative sense - I think a little bit of CF is actually a good thing. It's the painstaking attention to detail and getting it right, and looking at things from different angles coupled with creativity that gets results every time. And yes, engineers, doctors, technicians etc all need those CF qualities, so they often (but not always) make good photographers.

    Pad is proving interesting indeed. I decided I would not plan in advance, which makes me feel very uncomfortable. I only have so much spontaneity!

    But looking back over my posts, I've got some interesting images to follow up on and explore properly at a later date.

    So Day 10 I'll keep it simple The Eye's have it!

    The pups are finally out of the confining puppy box. They were growing too large for it.
