    Vimy Memorial Bridge at Night

This is my first attempt at night photography. Contrary to what the exif says, I was about 200 meters from the bridge. This shot is the result of manually blending three shots.

    As usual C & C are welcomed.

I am a student of military history and am presently reading (actually listening to - it is from Audible.com) an excellent book on the Great War: A World Undone, The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918 by G.J. Meyer. This is an fine and in-depth (the recording is 27 hours long) history of the Great War. It primarily concerns itself with the Western Front, the Balkans and the Eastern Front and just vaguely mentions the happenings in the Middle East.

I have just finished the portion concerning Vimy Ridge.

Nice shot Andre. For your next outing there, try getting a lot closer to the bridge. I've seen some magnificent night shots of it done from much closer than from where you were shooting.

Nice image. It might also look nice if the scene is shot just after the sunset when the sky turns blue

    Thank you Richard.

I can't say that I am much of an history buff but I certainly recognize the significance of Vimy Ridge to the coming of age of Canada. Great sacrifices not forgotten.

    Manfred,

Thank for your kind words and for your suggestion of moving closer to the bridge.

I took the OP shot from the south side of the bridge on the west bank of the river. From where I stood, closer would mean get in a boat! However, there is public access on the north side of the bridge from which you can get much closer. You can even get under it. I took these funky SOOC shots there late last winter.

I also got this shot of the bridge from as close as I could get using my kit lens at 18 mm. I did not dare move left to see if I could have eliminated the trees from the picture since I had no idea where the ground ended and the river started under that snow.

I did not process those pictures because the white bridge, the white snow and the white sky did not seem to offer much possibilities.

I know that the river is also accessible from the east shore on the north side of the bridge but I have yet to explore that area. Judging from the Google map of the area, it might not be possible to get any closer.

I look forward to my next attempt to photograph this lovely bridge at night. What should I be looking for from a composition point of view besides getting closer?

    Thank you Binnur.
Unfortunately, shooting right after sunset does not fit in my schedule at this time of the year. Maybe just before sunrise would work.

    Thank you very much Izzie.

This was my first attempt at night photography but it will definitely not be my last.
If you try this, make sure to bring a flashlight!
