Broken Water Glass again but a completely different image

The photo in this thread features the same broken glass and two shards shown in the first thread. I'll only mention for now that Nandakumar gave me the idea of making a photo of the glass that perhaps makes the viewer feel endangered by the sharp point.

I'm very interested in learning the story and mood you feel are being conveyed.

    Setup
The setup is exactly as in the other photo except no flag was needed. The tabletop is clear glass and the background is textured blue art paper. A small continuous-light lamp lights the background from below. The liquid is about two-thirds water and one-third glycerine.

    Beautifully photographed as always.
My preference is for the other one you've just posted because for me the combination of the beautiful colours/tones with the sharp shards in the foreground and the eerie glass in the background give me a greater sense of imagined danger for the imagined story behind the image. (Stephan King novel)... Although this one definitely makes me feel like I might cut myself if I'm not careful, I'm also mesmerized by the beauty of the ice cubes. So yes scary, but the first one creates a greater sense of fear... Eerily beautiful! (original image)

Sense of immediate aftermath of accident, ice hasn't melted and water is still visible; so time is the first thought. Second thought is that the particular stemware doesn't necessarily go with ice cubes; so there were perhaps two drinkers involved. Too logical I know, but that is where my mind goes when viewing this composition.

Sorry, Chritina, but I've never read any Stephan King novels.

John: You have no idea how good everything you wrote makes me feel. That's because the image conveys to you everything that was important for me to convey.

I've read just a couple and no more because they are too scary for imaginative souls like me...

My logical point of view imagines that I dropped a drink at a party (different types of glasses), and yes, a definite sense of a need to be careful (danger) when cleaning up the mess so I don't cut myself on the sharp shards of glass. But an immediate sense of time because the droplets on the ice cubes are still fresh.

Thanks for clarifying, Christina! Between you and John I am very pleased at having apparently successfully told the story.

This is terrific!!! really liked it; the presence of water gives it life and freshness; the sharpness of edges is felt more .....

You can't mean that a Stephen King novel is more full of suspense than the opening of my novel? I don't believe it!!

Excellent again, Mike. The fact that we can just see the stem of another glass in the background just adds to the intrigue. Brilliantly set up.

I like this one better than the other one as it has a story to it more one can think about. I also like the composition.

Just terrific. Is the owner of the (presumably) intact glass the victor. The plot thickens.

    Thank you, everyone!

Nobody has mentioned the third glass implying a third person at the table. It's less obvious because it's behind the broken glass on the right side. I included that glass to put a twist in the start of Donald's novel.

That's a really interesting comment in the context of how I came to make the two photos. The image in the other thread intentionally provokes a lot of unanswered questions, as Donald pointed out. The image in this thread intentionally leaves fewer unanswered questions; we at least know the water glass became broken when it was knocked down and that there had been at least three people (because there are three glasses) at the table. In the other image we have no idea how many people had been in the room or how the water glass became broken.

Well, I think Christina kinda did in post #5 above; "different types of glasses" and "party".

    I noticed, but didn't mention

Ah, so the plot thickens. There are three of them involved. A ménage à trois. So now we have several reasons as to why and how that glass ended up being broken.

It could have been an accidental breakage but that sharp piece of glass pointing diagonally downwards suggests conflict to me - particularly as it is directed at the two cubes (solidity). The glass spike + two ice cubes possibly represent the 3 drinkers and an argument.

I think Greg and Donald should combine their talents on an upcoming novel.

I am another one of those annoying people that prefers the first version. Not being an aspiring crime writer I find the arrangement a bit busy.

As always I find it hard to fault your technique.

I don't find that the least bit annoying. The image in this thread was not intended to be an improvement over the first version; it was intended only to be a very different image using the same subjects. The images are so different that I would expect some people to strongly prefer one over the other depending on their taste.

Good - I never really thought you would be annoyed... anyway I suspect people that get too annoyed by comments would quickly refrain from submitting images for C and C.

P.S. Appreciate the details you gave on how you set it up.
