    Rusty pipes

OK, here is a fairly heavily processed attempt at a color version. I followed Manfred's suggestion and used the Nik tonal contrast filter, as well as the structure filter, both globally and for control points, along with more standard (for me) LR and PS stuff.

    Reactions? Is it overprocessed?

The most recent version is by far the best one to my taste. Not at all overly processed. It's the only image that makes me feel as if touching the metal might scratch my finger tips and that's what the rusty surface of a physical scene conveys to me. The light and dark tones also convey the shape of the metal better for me than any of the other versions.

Some images command the photographer to take the bull by the horns and show who's the boss. When that happens, it generally means pushing the pixels a lot farther than in a typical situation. This image just might be one of those untypical situations.

I like this very much Dan. I compared it to my quick edit and find that you have far richer tones than the image that I produced. You are certainly showing the textures and colours in this version.

Many thanks. I've put this version up on my website, where I have started a small gallery of images of patterns.

Nice site, Dan. It seems to me I've seen many of these images before.

Interesting as to how this latest addition is the only colour image out of the four in the set.

A very nice start to your "Patterns" gallery!

This is something I regularly struggle with when populating my website. I might have waited to post the color image until I also posted at least one more color image in the gallery. In other words, there are two considerations -- the strength of each individual photo and the strength of the group of photos.

    Manfred and Mike,

many thanks. Manfred, yes, I think I posted either all or all but one of them here for comments. Mike, I haven't paid as much attention as I should to the overall appearance of galleries. It's on my to-do-list. I have parallel 'second tier' galleries for things I shoot most, e.g., bugs and flowers, and I need to demote a lot of images to those.
