    In-between Cameras

In the process of changing camera systems so all I have to shoot with at the moment is my iPhone.

The weather has been grim but I have to take the dog out and we nearly always end up on the beaches near us - so you shoot what is in front of you and make the most of it...

Also shot a bit of colour and even a bit of video to give you an idea of the conditions.

Which all goes to show why the point and shoot low end camera market is in trouble.

And which goes to show that if you put any type of image capturing equipment into the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, then you'll end up with very fine images ... still and/or moving!

It looks like the weather your way is just as "nice" as it is over on this side of the Atlantic. November is one of my least favourite months purely due to the weather.

Just to add a thought to Donald's statement, I remember many years ago when Kodak (remember them?) introduced a new line of low cost cameras and to demonstrate how good they were they commissioned a number of well known commercial photographers to use them to create images for Kodak's advertising campaign.

Needless to say, the images produced were stunning and the results were unlikely reproducible by the target customer Kodak had in mind. I believe they sold a lot of the new line of cameras.

Lots of wind hitting the surf and generating the foam, it had all blown down one end of the bay and was sort of stuck in a corner of the beach - the dog loved it.

The weather has been grim. N longer the warmth and long days of summer but not properly winter so no thin watery light and clean air. Its just grey, windy, wet and cold.

Excellent video...and as for the stills, I like #1 and #4... even though I do not really like the smoothy water at first. The triangle makes it interesting, whereas the threatening clouds brings drama to the scene in#4...Composition. Composition. Composition. These are all good shots.

The stills are not only thoroughly enjoyable but also enlightening for someone such as myself who is completely ignorant of the capabilities of modern cell phone cameras. Are there settings on the camera that allow you to control the shutter speed? Once you got the shutter speed slow enough to achieve the desired look of the water, how were you able to hold the cell phone still enough?

I often find myself with a photo opportunity but without my camera, I don't use my iphone enough! Nice images Robin!

I use an app called SlowShutterCam that allows 1/4 1/2 1s 2s 4s 8s 15s 30s and 60 second exposure times regardless of how bright it is. Essential it shoots video and overlays all the frames to create one image. I bought a Griptight Mount tripod adapter by a firm called Joby that works really well with various mobile phones and seems to hold the iPhone in its case very solid. I recently bought a lightweight Manfrotto tripod (see below) specifically to take out with the dog on our walks as even though my main tripod is a carbon fibre Manfrotto its still an effort to lug it about.

I try to treat anything that takes a picture the same way - yes many 'cameras' will have their limits but many aren't entirely insurmountable and often its just a mind-set thing stopping you using them. I'm a big iPhoneography fan so take shots with it every day, of as many things as I can and try to push what it (I) can do as much as possible. I am convinced I've gotten better at seeing shots by knowing I can always have a crack at taking a picture no matter what I see.

Now that I realize you used a tripod, an adapter to hold your cell phone and a special app to control your exposure time, I have only one thing to say: THAT'S CHEATING!

Seriously, it's so refreshing to see such a serious approach to using the camera built into the cell phone. It's no wonder the results are so successful.

I have one of those lightweight ones and also a heavier Manfrotto but I still refuse to own a iphone nor ipod. Maybe next year, who knows, I might change my mind...
