Wine: Malbec

I just had to make a photo today before preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Ironically, this wine won't be served with the dinner.

This Malbec is a gran reserva from Mendoza, the most widely heralded region for making Malbec in Argentina, actually perhaps anywhere. As far as I can tell there are no regulations about when Argentinian labels are allowed to display the terms reserva or gran reserva (unlike the same designations displayed on wine labels from Italy and Spain that are regulated); it seems that wineries in Argentina use the two terms at will.

Setup
The tabletop is a purple shirt and the background is paper with a metallic-like finish. A medium continuous-light lamp fitted with a diffusion sock is above the subjects on the left. A white reflector on the right lightens the shadows and adds a reflection on that side of the bottles. A white reflector in front on the bottom brightens the copper-colored parts of the white labels and adds a reflection to the center of the bottles below the labels.

I love the colors and the composition Mike, a very nice image Is the darkness at the bottom because of your lighting? At first sight I found the bottom part too dark but then I realised that if it wasn't so dark my eyes would be going around the image. The darkness at the bottom directs my eyes to the bottles

Is the darkness at the bottom because of your lighting?

The fabric is dark purple, so that area of the scene is the darkest area on its own except of course the darkest area of the wine bottles. The primary light source is positioned above the wine bottles, so the brightness of its light considerably falls off in the bottom area. I also applied a vignette during post-processing that darkens the bottom corners and the bottom center beginning at about halfway between the bottom of the bottle on the left and the frame. The area of the bottom affected by the vignette is probably only 25% of the purple fabric.

Having enjoyed a bottle of Argentinian Malbec for lunch today I can appreciate this image although I suspect my bottle cost considerably less than those photographed. I am a poor Brit when all is said and done.
On this occasion Mike I think the background is perfect and works so well with the foil on the bottles. I suspect the wine merchant would be happy to pay for this image that so ably portrays his excellent wine.

My lunchtime brew was much cheaper at source as I had to pay £16 in a restaurant.

I like the pallet in this shot, Mike, and folds in the foreground fabric add a bit of interest to the darker area.
