re: Containership
An interesting series, George. You must have some good contacts to allow you access to a drydock and the ability to wander around the work area as well as being able to board the ship.

Yes, an insight we'd never normally see.
Thanks for sharing, Dave

One from the engine room. Stairs in the cilinder of the engine. I couldn't shoot them better.

re: Containership
You know its a big engine if a ladder fits inside the cylinder!

Re: Containership
It was a nice experience beeing on such a ship and in the drydock.
The last picture of the engine was shot with ss 1/8, f5.6 and ISO 800. On a D300 and Nikon 18-200. It's not the best picture but for 1/8 and no tripod it's not bad.
Seeing big ships I always think of a Canadian industrial photographer: Edward Burtynsky.
Shipbreaking of big ships in India and Bangladesh.

And a statement used for his photo's: manufactured landscapes. I don't know if this is a existing english expression but I like it.

Re: Containership
Thanks for the additional image. Those huge marine engines are always something I found intriguing. Big. powerful and slow. I remember diving near the shipping channel in the St Lawrence River when one of the large Lakers went buy; nowhere near as large as the big cargo ships but I could sure feel the pressure waves from the propellers. Just a slow thud, thud, thud hitting the body.
I've seen Burtynsky's work a few times (once in co-exhibition with some of Ansel Adam's works). He goes for very large prints, something that is not obvious from viewing the websites. A real "pixel peeper's" paradise, getting close up and looking at the details of his images.
