Snow Goose Migration - C and C Welcome

I was very lucky this week to get to a small pond outside Ottawa where a flock of several thousand Snow Geese were resting before continuing their migration from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks L. Paul - My estimate would be around 4,892, with a margin of error of .0003%, or roughly 1.5 geese. That applies if you don't include the 5 Canada geese mixed in with the snow geese!

Kaye and Sam: Thanks for commenting, it certainly was an amazing spectacle!

John, actually yes. They came in at a low angle initially to identify their landing spot and then reduced their air speed at the last minute to drop into the water nearly vertically. Quite a lot of flapping, cackling and cavorting as you might imagine.

Nice set. Collectively they give a good sense of the goings on of the flock. Stumbling across a similar situation years ago is what got me hooked on shooting birds in flight. It's an awesome thing to witness so many birds at one time.

Amazingly close to my manual count of more than 71.4 but I forgot to not include the Canada geese..

I can appreciate it would have been a spectacular sight.

Just to remind you, John...they are birds, not helicopters...I bet you some of these birds will be passing this way in the Midwest soon. I've seen quite a few of them heading South yesterday...they must the 10 black ones in your first shot, Stuart...

I am glad someone was there to see them off...you. Good shots.
