Thread: Day 12: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

James, very nicely done. I am going to have to dig out a back issue of one of my photo magzines where some guy was photographing Navy Seals in this style. I though he had over cooked it but this is just spot on. Excellent work

Kit, love the abstract. My immediate reaction was "closer crop" but on second view it works well

High winds with much blowing sand and dust. No pictures here for fear of lens damage. I'll try to make it up tomorrow.

Who used the bus for target practice? We'll send our BFG around to sort 'em out

More seriously, it looks like you've taken off an air conditioner, or similar, and this is the pipe and fixing holes - will it go back after dealing with the rust?

Anyway, less time here (if no interweb) means more time to take pictures, so we'll expect an update when you are back within range (I have to admit I wondered how you stayed connected, and how often you move around).

    We'll miss you,
We still have i-webs here, in fact better than the usual spot.
The bits above are on the back of the bus where the NZ illegal original stop lights were. Original cream and red showing through the current green. There were some wee squiddly ones right down on the bumper, but those are going too as they are the very devil for blowing. So...nice new leds at the legal height going on instead.

    And in addition....

Jeroen - another cracker from you. Those little clouds really give texture.

Rob - you live in a very beautiful part of the counrty and showcase it beautifully here.

James!!! Zowie, man, but you rock!! That is such a penetrating stare. The treatment is something that a man can take and look so well with, but mate, I'd run a mile if you pointed a camera at me.

    Great shot,
    Thanks Dave,

Sorry you don't like the big white border, but I prefer it to the older style ... and I want to keep my PAD shots looking consistent (it must be the excessive / compulsive in me!).

    Thank you James for commenting.
I am not so sure about that.
For today I will try again this kind of picture but in a different place, trying to improve the image.

    Peter,
Really great vision on (just) a fork you put down in your shot. The shallow DoF works very very well and I like the abstractness it shows. I would like to see about the same shot without the blue reflection in the left bottom corner.

    Thanks Jeroen,

I actually prefer my post in the day 11 thread. i've been using this surface recently as it seems to be capable of variou colour reflections depending on the light and angle.

Well, Peter it might also amaze you to discover that I have posted this in the wrong thread - this should be day 13 shot!!! I can't really move it now - I'm sure it doesn't matter.

Did you mean manual focussing when you talked of wearing glasses? I had cataract removal 2 years ago and now have lens implants, so I don't need to wear glasses apart from some reading - I can even read supermarket labels unaided. It does help with photography.

    Re: Eryngium

I'm going to cheat a bit here. I couldn't get out with the camera during the dust storm, so I am loading these here for fill. They are only half a day late.

I don't know what this plant is, but it blooms only every other year. The blooms are very tiny, but the whole top of the shaft bursts forth.

Showing more of the shaft. The stalks are about 6 feet tall.

This is another for which I have no name. It is also about 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall, very spindly. The fly(?) is about 1/3 the size of a honey bee.

    Re: North Gower

That's beautiful, Rob. Layers and layers of landscape, with layers and layers of clouds above. And the track in the foreground pulls you into the cleft between the hills on the coast. Great composition.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    Re: Pigeon in a tree

Nice shot of the pigeon, Dave: a little dark at the tail, maybe? Wonderful detail, and the subtle colors really come through. You should have had bubbles looking up, though.

    Cheeers,
    Rick
