Hi Russ,
Firstly, I appreciate your reply is a bit of 'a rant' and shouldn't be taken too seriously, please take my response in the same spirit.
It is not that CS6 has just stopped working (like the hypothetical remote), the problem has arisen because something else has changed; Bernie now has a monitor with two-four times the linear resolution than what was commonly available back when CS6 code was written (likely over 3 years ago).
I could suggest this situation is more akin to; the remote's user has lost the ability to press the buttons and now expects the manufacturer to supply a telepathic remote free of charge! OK, I exaggerate to make a point
PS - have you tried new batteries in that remote?
Joking aside, no offence is meant, and you are entitled to your point of view (to which there is some merit), I'm just exploring the 'other' side.
Am I biassed?
Well; I do subscribe to PS CC and find the currently reasonable charge (for single app. use) is easier to live with than the need to spend hundreds of pounds when I get a new camera* and of course, I get the functional updates a few times a year now, compared to only when I upgraded (every 2 years or so) previously. The cost over time (years) is not too dissimilar, close enough for the benefits to outweigh the disadvantages.
* Yeah, I know, it's a pain that they 'make us spend money' to support new cameras (e.g. for RAW file compatibility), but I have also written code, so again, I have some sympathy/understanding for software companies when faced with external changes and their need to recover costs of continued support.
I also appreciate that some people didn't upgrade every 2-3 years and once they've bought something, expect it to last forever (e.g. I drive a 10 year old car!), so for them, the subscription model is bad news. Would I lease a car? No way, for the use I'd put it to, not gonna be cost effective.
Subscription works for some, not for others, we should be grateful we have the choice.
I am not looking to take this thread further OT with the subscription argument, if it starts going that way, I'll move the posts out of here. I just wanted to answer the remote control analogy, which I found somewhat incomparable to Bernie's issue.
Cheers, Dave
PS
Good idea to suggest asking Julieanne Kost, if anyone will know ...

Robin's link looks useful too, although I appreciate it's not so easy for people without technical knowledge to do.
