While they are great images, I am going to buck the trend and suggest that I'd have tried a little more space in front of the nose, especially on #1 (if they'd been mine).
At the moment, with shots like these, I have a bit of a preference for liking the eyes to be looking in to the corner of the shot, with this in mind and playing about with LyteBox, I think #1 works for me better as a square composition, starting from lower right corner, which adds some on left (in front of nose) and removes some from the top.
Adding more in front of the nose to #2, would almost end up with it looking like a square #1 though - not sure if that's a bad thing.
There's more white fur texture in #2, which I find appealing.
