I don't know of the author at all, I'm afraid. Is it a 2nd edition that you've got? If so, it was published in 2012. In this fast-moving technological age, date of publication is, I think, quite relevant. Although the principles espoused (so long as they are sound and well written) will last and have a long-shelf life, the means by which to apply and achieve those may well have moved on considerably.

I think that a 2012 publication is still going to be very relevant. If it had been a 1st edition (2008), then a bit less so. But my 'bible' for the purpose (Michael Freeman, 'The Complete Guide to Black & White Digital Photography', ILEX, 2009, is still what I'd refer anyone to. But, as I say, I have not read Hoffmann, so can't comment.

Brian - the publisher, Rocky Nook is a well known publisher of books that are primarily about photography, often written by excellent, but somewhat less well known authors. I have several books published by them and they are all excellent.

I can't comment on this particular one, as I haven't read it. I have the same book as Donald as my main B&W reference.
