Leucistic Sandhill Crane
Leucistic Sandhill Crane and its mate. This is not an albino, but a white phase that is a result of abnormal cell divisions early in embryonic development. I posted this in part so you could compare the leucistic phase with the common phase of cranes. Pay special attention to the eyes, beak, legs and blotches of pigment on the white bird. Be sure to look at it in the large version.

How far were you from this shot? I think you had zoomed too much here...

Interesting, Chuck. Did you find any information on how rare this situation is?

Re: Leucistic Sandhill Crane
Thanks to all for the feedback. Dan, I thinks it is fairly rare, but I don't have numbers. It happens in mammals as well as birds. If you Google it I think you will enjoy what you learn.
