Caught without a camera - well, almost!

Walking the dog recently in precarious weather on one of our local beaches. Intermittent showers and strong winds ruled the day, but the sky partly cleared to reveal this rainbow. Not exactly a spectacular example but the cloud shapes appealed to me making me wish I hadn't left the Nikon at home. So I resorted to my iPhone 4. Three exposures merged in CS6 Photomerge.

    "The best camera...... etc.etc."

And very successfully so. The world of 'iphoneography' (or whatever it's called this week') is certainly taking off. I'm a subscriber to Black & White magazine and there's now a monthly section devoted to phone apps and their use.

Great result! May I ask what app you used to take the shots?

Do you have to have an app to be able to shoot this? Isn't an iPhone sort of point and shoot? Now I am confused, Sam...

Anyway, with a little bit of pp, this will be better...

Donald, I guess I would use my iPhone camera more (and possibly up-grade to a newer one with a better camera app) were it not for the lack of an EVF. I just hate having to screw my eyes up in bright sunlight to frame the shot. Perhaps I need to go full circle and carry round a large black cape just like the 'real' photographers of 150 years ago. I suppose it's easier to carry the Nikon. Many thanks for your comments.

Thanks Sam. The camera app used here is the basic iPhone bundled camera. I have tried some of the others but they never really grabbed me. The camera within Photoshop Express (for iPhone) is interesting with its digital zoom lens which works surprisingly well.

Izzie, thank you also. The three exposures are straight out of camera and photo merged, straightened, cropped and selectively slightly sharpened. Otherwise the exposure, colour, contrast were all pretty much as I recall the scene.

Thanks Binnur. It's a great place to walk the dog and shoot the breeze.

Many thanks Sam and Grahame. In high winds sometimes the magic in the clouds comes and goes quickly. Because of the wide sweep here and my pre-occupation with the rainbow, I didn't really 'see' the drama in the clouds until I merged the three exposures.
