    Fisheye Fun

On most days, the weather was too bad in Salzburg for any decent landscape/cityscape photography and so I fitted the 8mm fisheye to try for something a bit different. Not everybody's cup of tea but I would really appreciate some feedback.

    Hi John,

I'll blame you if my eyes are still bulging tomorrow

I think these are all very good examples of how to use such a lens well.

Was #1 shot landscape and cropped?

    Cheers, Dave

Thanks all for the comments. Yes Dave it's about a 50% crop from the RHS. The others are mainly intact other than what's been lost through straightening etc.

I hope Izzie sees this thread, I know she wasn't using a Fisheye lens, just a (an?) UWA, but many of the principles for shooting are similar.

    Thanks, Dave

I don't usually like fisheye images but, images 2-4 are super. I am not that terribly keen on image #1 but, 3's 2-4 are awe inspiring!

They're great and even better for knowing you had fun doing them and rising to the challenge of making something of the weather. Especially like the 1st and 3rd.

Thanks Dave, Richard and Kay for the additional comments. It's a lens I use only occasionally. It useful used with corrective software as a ultra (ultra) WA but it needs a different mind set to use it creatively.

    I really like #1.

A night shot with those lamps glowing and casting shadows would look great I reckon.

I just got in here, Dave...I could have lied and said I was using a fisheye lens instead of a UWA at the time... I have a fishey eye lens -- I still don't know how to use it. You know my crap...

Anyway, moving on...I like #2 and #3 shots here best. That person at the end of the walkway/arch is really engaging even if I have to expand it in lightbox to see if she is coming or going...looking at the position of her shoes, she is going that way... #2 is an excellent shot too. All fun shots.

Robbie, I did get out one evening but didn't think of that. Too late now but thanks for the thought.

Izzie, are you trying to say that my wife doesn't know if she's coming or going? Thanks for the comment.

    Re: Fisheye Fun

As has been suggested already, the fisheye is a very specialised piece of equipment and shooting with it is a particular skill. You've really got to choose your subjects carefully. All of these work, but this one below is, I think, a particularly excellent example of a fisheye being used properly, imaginatively and creatively.

    Re: Fisheye Fun

Thank you Donald. I couldn't agree more and it is a real learning curve. Using it just for the sake of something different rarely works effectively. The fisheye characteristic has to add something. Occasionally, I see shots that might work but I have to be in the right mind set. It doesn't happen often.

Thank you Binnur. I hadn't spotted that but I can see what you mean.
