Reprofiling after WIndows 10 upgrade

I fairly regularly re-profile and calibrate my monitor, using a ColorMunki, but to be honest I can never see a change between the Before and After views that the device offers.

Until I upgraded to Windows 10, when there was a huge change. So if you upgrade, make sure you re-profile (of course, being careful souls, you would have done anyway).

I've re-profiled mine since upgrading also, I have it set to do so every few weeks anyway. The profiling didn't change but you do notice the difference if it's set to adjust for changing light.

I just ordered a new computer and made sure it had Windows 7 on it. I'm glad to say that my other machine (recently re-loaded with 7) has finally quite offering the free upgrade to 10 . .

The change on my monitor after calibrating whether using Windows 7 or 10 was the same and very noticeable.

Thanks for the warning. I haven't upgraded because my university isn't yet ready to support Windows 10. I do have windows 10 on a Surface, and I have found it different enough that I suspect it will take some time to get used to.

Re doing it often: my experience is that there is no reason to calibrate often. I think the advice to calibrate often reflects the old CRT displays, which drifted more over time. Someone who knows more may weigh in, but my experience is that the calibration of modern monitors is quite stable, and I read that this is characteristic of LCD displays.

I was calibrating every two weeks because that was the default reminder in my Spyder calibration tool. Over a year ago Manfred and a couple other people explained that calibration of LCD monitors is probably not needed more than once each year. I changed the reminder setting to every six months, which is the longest period of time provided in the software. I'm noticing no difference between calibrating every six months and calibrating every two weeks.

I quite like the new interface, and it does seem faster to me. Not had any significant app problems either. My old Canon printer has had to go, though (it was only used as a back up anyway). Canon's "advice" was to change the printer or change the os. Thanks.

Having said that, I've replaced it with a little wireless laser, which is much more suitable for regular paper printing.

Exactly. In CRT displays, the degradation in colour was quite rapid as the picture tube aged, and quite frankly they had a shorter working life than current displays. In modern screens, the components, especially the source of the backlight is much more stable and doesn't degrade nearly as quickly, so I suspect that the color calibration kit manufacturers keep the two week suggestion more to make it seem like you are getting good value for your money. Saying you need to spend $200 or so and use it only when you upgrade your operating system or computer screen is going to make it sound like an expensive investment.

I suspect that if you see a significant change in your profiles between updates suggest that your screen is about to die. I saw this a number of years back with the screen dying a few months later (the backlight went).

I replaced my rather ancient i1 for a Colormunki a few weeks ago and found a small but noticeable difference in the screen after I profiled it. The reason for the upgrade was that the old drivers were incompatible with the newer operating system.

Good tip! I don't remember ever seeing it. Fortunately, I've also never had a monitor die.
