Popeye the sailor man

This is a bust image of a Popeye doll my dad had when he was growing up in London England. He was born in 1932 so this doll is around 80 years old. I was doing some tabletop photography this morning and this is the result.....along with a few others I will post.

I will post a full image later but I'm curious if anyone finds this image creepy.

Not so much creepy but sad, the quality of the doll suggests it was homemade with whatever materials were available. It would be interesting to see more of the doll's body.

You are correct John, and it may have even been a hand-me-down back in the 30's as it has many repairs. I remember my dad telling me when he was still alive that they were poor and this was the only toy he had until after the war.

I find it creepy a bit like looking in the mirror with a hangover..

I like the full image. Probably your dad was just as happy playing with it as he would have been with an ultra expensive one.
TV adverts aimed at children to get them to demand expensive junk ends up in wasting a lot of money. Although not a lot of TVs around in 1932 ...

I like the full one better than the first although as what I saw of the close-up is the age and the value this might have bring at an auction place if presented properly...if this is mine, I will put this in a glass case so it can't be touched anymore and it will be displayed in a very prominent place in my house. I am envious...I love old things, like first edition books and old stuffs so I am biased.

I was born a few months before your Dad and suprised the doll did not get evacuated during the war as I was and Popeye would surely have been evacuated as well.
It was intended I would be sent to Canada [Vancouver] but that fell through and I ended up in the Midlands.

I like the full image better too, although a little bit creepy ( sorry ) but I am sure for your Dad it mean a lot, probably made handmade with love too.......
