    She's Not Scottish, She's Polish!

A Los Angeles shelter had this girl whom we named "Chance" listed as a Bearded Collie.

    She's Not A Beardie...

One of our volunteers pulled Chance who is about 18 months old from the shelter yesterday because she was going to be euthanized last night.

    She's Not A Beardie...

Chance is too small to be a Beardie. She only weighs 28 pounds (12.7 kilograms). My vet who comes from Poland said that Chance is a Polish Lowland Sheepdog (although probably a mix). These dogs are smaller than the Beardies but are the ancestors of the Bearded Collie. Apparently, there was a lot of commerce (mostly involving sheep and wool) between Scotland and Poland in early times. Polish Lowland Sheep Dogs appeared in Scotland and intermixed with local herding dogs resulting in the Bearded Collie...

Tomorrow (if it stops raining) I will get some shots of Chance outside, where a herding dog should be shot!

Thanks... She is a lovely dog with a loving personality. If she is a Lowland Sheepdog, they are very intelligent. She is actually quite a bit larger than she looks on these images. She is quite long in the body. Chance looks more like a Polish Tatra Sheepdog.

Looks are almost identical but, Chance is far too small to be that breed. It would be fun to do a DNA test to see what genes are floating around in that white body.

I wonder if she could herd my Maltese

My wife glanced at what I was up to at the computer and commented on what a lovely looking dog and I have to agree.

I particularly like the second shot.

Why would anybody want to put down an animal as attractive as that. It's a good job this world has people like you in it Richard.

Certain animal shelters in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties are well known as "high kill" shelters. They give each dog a certain time in the shelter and euthanize it at the end of that time. We rescue many of our dogs from those shelters due to the "high kill" policies. Our San Diego County shelters do not euthanize dogs unless for health reasons or if a dog has vicious and aggressive behaviors.

We pull dogs from the San Diego shelters when they request us to (such as mothers with puppies) but, generally let the shelters adopt out most of their dogs. We concentrate our resources where it will do the most good, pulling dogs from those "high kill" shelters in the surrounding counties.

Chance was very scared in the shelter and would cower in the corner. No one was interested in such a timid dog. However, she has bloomed in the couple of days she has been with us and has elected me as "her person". Last night she slept on a dog bed next to my bed and she follows me around like a little lamb.

Our Roxie is a herding dog being an Aussie cattle dog...she would herd Huey everyday because she can't do it to us. She tried though although it is funny to look at when she lifts her front paw up you know she is going to pounce. Her teeth were too sharp when younger and we were able to stop her from herding us finally after so much talking to...

Your Chance is a cutie, Richard...I would love to take her if you are nearer...
